« on: 05/05/2015 20:11:31 »
Millions of people live close to volcanoes, but what danger are they in, and
are there any long term health effects caused by volcanoes?

apart from being fried, boiled, gassed, suffocated, or having your house fall down and all your crops and cattle washed away in a river of molten rock, nothing serious.

Would you count death as a longterm effect? The citizens of Pompeii, Herculaneum, Krakatoa and Mont Pelee have been quiet for a long time now.
helping to stem the tide of ignorance

My understanding is that there is no cure for it.

If brains were made of dynamite, I wouldn't have enough to blow my nose.

Its the unpredictability of volcanoes that make them so, ermmmm, unpredictable.

Even today, with all our technology, a sleeping volcano can erupt with little or no detectable warning. So why do some choose to live within the danger zone?

Short memories; rich soil.
Observe; collate; conjecture; analyse; hypothesise; test; validate; theorise. Repeat until complete.

When visiting Hawaii, I heard about the volcano that won a war.

Two tribes were fighting, but one of them was decimated by a lava flow.

Kamehameha I, leader of the remaining tribe, went on to become the first king to unite Hawaii.
