Hi h4mi,

When is the last time you cleansed your body of parsites?

Hi Donnah,
Is your question in line with sort of "worm treatment" like what you give your pet every six months? If its so, the answer is no, and the weight gain idea has been tried for the past 25 yrs. I am fit, healthy, but just cannot put on even an ounce of weight.

Have you tried a weight training regimen combined with a high protein (including protein supplmenets) diet?

I recommend the MAX-OT weight regimen at AST Sport Science (www.astss.com) it's a free 12 week program that guides you as to how and when to train.  You need to sign up for access, but they won't charge you anything...they'll just try and sell you health supplements.  (which are pretty good as far as these things go)  Combine that with a high protein balanced diet (40% protein, 30% carb, 30% fat) and you'll put on lean muscle mass.  As always, talk to your doctor before starting anything like this if you're not in good shape.

The key is, eating a lot of food isn't going to add mass unless you're weight training to force your body to build new tissue.  It sounds like your metabolism is high enough that eating a lot won't add any fat either, which is a good thing.

How much weight do you want to gain ? Given that your weight has remained stable for such a long time argues that you are at your genetically-determined weight. If it had changed suddenly then I would be concerned that there might be something else going on, but the reason we all look different is because we are all genetically different - and that includes the size and shape of our bodies, and how they handle energy.

Last year I tried to increase my weight as I was doing lots of rowing and was always the small weedy one in the boat. I basically ate everything I could get my hands on and plenty of carbohydrates. There is a limit to what you can do I think though. I did manage it but it took 6 month before the results began to show. However as Cannabinoid mentioned I was combining it with weight training.

However I stopped rowing it took ages to shift the weight again. [:(]

I always wondered if I had affected my metabolism. Is this possible? If so, would that be another way to gain weight?

Chris,  is it necessarily unhealthy to be at a weight other than your genetically determined one?  For instance, would a body builder (who doesn't use steroids) be at a health risk?  I've always wondering if being overweight from muscle is any better on your heart than being overweight from fat.

Thanks everyone for adding to this topic. In response though, Chris, I get your point, but would you consider 5'7 & 120lb(8.5st) an ideal weight? I can easily lose weight though. And Claire, the way to do that is be hyperactive. I have always got to be doing something. Never come-off-the-ceiling so to speak. And NO, I don't smoke anything & don't drink any alcohol either.and here's another "issue" >> I only sleep a couple of hrs a day.& I am wide awake the whole day; But if I sleep any longer than that, I am sooo tired the following day that I am literally nodding. Move to the United States.  Chris will tell you, that'll put weight on you.  Especially move to New Orleans, although I heard that Detroit has now beaten us as the most obese city and N.O. is not even in the top ten any more.  Seriously though, my aunt Jennie used to be like that.  She ate like a longshoreman and never did get past a size 4.  I think your genetics may limit you, but don't feel badly.  There are people out there who would kill to have your metabolism.

I recently heard that Missouri was the "fattest" state.  I'm not sure what the criteria is for this...just regular weight (which can be misleading) or average body fat %

Dear h4mi / Sherman

The most accurate index of weight is the Quetelet or Body Mass Index (BMI) which you calculate by dividing your weight in kilograms by your height in metres, and then dividing the answer by your height in metres again. (in other words weight in kilos / (height in metres) squared.

The ideal BMI is a ratio of 20 - 25. Below 25 and you are too thin, above 25 and you are too fat.

Work out your's and come back to us

Hi h4mi,

Yes, I was referring to deworming yourself just like you do for pets.  I use a natural parasite cleanse, but there are commercial preparations available.

I thought worms did more than just make you unable to gain weight...that they make you lose even more weight and get sickly from lack of nutrients.  He said he's healthy otherwise, so....

Cannabinoid, worms can make you sick, but it doesn't happen overnight so you can be infected (tough not to be) and not even notice until they multiply dramatically.  Recently I did the lemon cleanse enema and rousted out something that looked like a bunch of beige threads about three inches long (yuck).

MissMontana, I normally use the parasite cleanse outlined in Dr. Hulda Clark's book The Cure for All Cancers.  The herbs used are cloves, wormwood and black walnut tincture.

Bezoar, the parasite cleanse (Dr. Clark's) kills intestinal fluke adults, eggs, miracidia, redia, cercaria and metaceria.  It also kills several others, something like 80 different kinds (going on memory since my book went AWOL).  What it doesn't get are the tough ones like tapeworms.  She recommends cloves and a preparation called "Rascal" for 20 days to kill the others, though I confess I haven't used Rascal myself yet.  What would those thread-like worms that I mentioned to Cannabis be?

Hello everyone thanks for your input.Chris, are those figures for the BMI 20 - 25 or 200 - 250; reason being, working out the figures, I end up with  78.5. The workings as follows, taking the figures given in my earlier response. Weight in kgs(120 lbs x 2.25)=283.5kg ; Divide this by height in  meters (5.7 divided by 3)= 1.9 meters=149.2; divided again by 1.9 m = 78.5

Is my answer/workings correct or do I need a counting frame[8)]. And how do boxers gain and lose weight in a matter of days?

h4mi, for calculating BMI in metric, I think the height has to be in centimeters.

Not quite !

It is quite correct to use metres in calculating your BMI, but you have made a fundamental mistake in coverting your weight to kilograms !

1 kilogram = 2.20462262 pounds

If you look at your calculation you have multiplied your weight by 2.2, instead of dividing it.

If you put the figures in correctly, including converting 5'7" to metres more accurately than you did, you arrive at a BMI of 18.8

Your ideal BMI is 20-25, meaning that you need to gain a bit of weight, as you surmise !

As to why you are thin, I think you have probably already given us a clue - you say that you never sit still. There may be reasons for that and it might be worth seeing a doctor if simple measures to gain weight don't work.

The only way to gain weight, in the absence of an absorption problem, is to increase the number of calories you take in, relative to your energy expenditure. I'm assuming that you've never knowingly had malabsorption or any other intestinal problem ?

As Donnah suggested, a remote possibility is parasites as these can make you thin, although you'd probably have seen them by now.

Donnah,
I have no idea what those worms might be.  Have never seen them with my patients.  The most I've seen are tapeworms, pinworms, and round worms, and I worked with an indigent and immigrant population at Charity Hospital.  Maybe Chris knows, as he's seen more international patients than I have, I'm sure.

In answer to Cannabinoids question yes bodybuilders are at at risk from heart attacks.

When one's body reaches the astronomical size that bodybuilders aim for the heart cannot cope.

I used to train 4 days a week in my desire to be large and witnessed many bodybuilders suffering from heart conditions.

Palpitations, pale skin, clammy to touch, complaints of spots in front of the eyes.

Arnold S.... has had 6 heart attacks!

I now no longer wish to be big and have cured my bigorexia with common sense.

Is it the muscle bulk alone?  I find that hard to believe.  I always thought it was the steroids.  Which brings me to another question.

My ex-boyfriend's son was into the bodybuilding scene and had a steroid habit.  He had a nauseating body odor -- sort of like a mixture of testicle sweat and cologne.  Could it have been the steroids that gave him the peculiar odor, or just one of those instances where a person just has a foul body odor naturally.  He also took a lot of IM vitamin supplements and protein powders.  And the kid was real clean too.  Showered twice a day, so I know it wasn't a lack of hygiene.  But this odor actually permeated the entire downstairs of the house.  His sister's said that is just the way he smells, but he'd been using steroids from age 14.  Now, at age 30, his blood pressure is 140/100, but he doesn't think the steroids have anything to do with that.  Hmmmm.

My girlfriend has high blood pressure as a direct result of taking steroids for a lung condition (hemosiderosis, not recurring thankfully) for several years.  She's 27, but she took a lot less steroids than a bodybuilder would have, and has high blood pressure from it.  Coincidentally, a cortisone shot in her knee (also a steroid) triggered latent type I diabetes.  I don't know if this is a risk with all steroids or just with cortisone.  Chris, you'd have a field day with this girl, she has so many weird 1-in-1,000,000 conditions.

It's worth bearing in mind that the word "steroid" is often misused. It refers to several classes of agents the glucocorticoids, mineralocorticoids and anabolic steroids. They are all steroid alcohol derivatives hence the name "steroid", yet their actions are all different.

Anabolic steroids are agents with testosterone-like actions. They are virilising and promote muscle development. These are the steroids of abuse in the gym.

Glucocorticoids, like cortisol (available over the counter in a tube as hydrocortisone cream), are immunosuppressive. They are essential to health. But excess exposure, either endogenously (e.g. because of a tumour) or exogenously (iatrogenically), produces severe side effects including hypertension, immunosuppression, gastric ulceration, osteoporosis, thin skin and striae, elevated lipids, hyperglycaemia / hyperinsulinaemia, truncal obesity, cataracts and psychiatric disturbances including depression.

Mineralocorticoids tell the kidney to reabsorb salt (sodium ions). The key mineralocorticoid is aldosterone, produced by the kidney. Most glucocorticoids also have (weak) mineralocorticoid effects too (which is why too much cortisol produces hypertension).

If these anabolic steroids are taken say, not on an everyday basis, would that still cause health/kidney problems? I was offered these on a well known gym/website, but I am not keen on injecting myself as some of these (correct me if I'm wrong) just cause water retention in the body/muscles..

Also worth bearing in mind that they suppress the activity of your testicles which can cause them to wither and, speaking chemically and metaphorically, drop off. Anabolic steroids can also trigger malignancies.

Very bad news. Not worth the risk.

Sleep is biologically crucial for health and wellbeing. A laboratory animal deprived of sleep will die. Humans deprived of sleep (often as a form of torture or interrogation) develop psychosis (schizophrenic symptoms).

There are a few rare diseases, on of which is called Fatal Familial Insomnia (appropriately enough), which causes sufferers to remain awake continuously, and fatally ! It's a prion disease a bit like CJD.

Reassuringly, for those who do not subscribe to the "early to bed, early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise" adage, recent research has found that people who don't fit this behaviour pattern are not less healthy (than those who do), and are also a bit richer too !

Yep, I read somewhere that most millionaires work 12 hours a day, so they do work for their money. I find I naturally wake up after about 6 hours.  If I stay in bed and manage to get back to sleep, it's only for a couple of hours, but generally at 6, I feel rested and ready to arise.

If working 12 hours a day is what millionaires do, then I should be totally loaded by now ! But my decidedly empty bank account tells a different story (and I'm not in gambling or drugs either !). Maybe my reward will come next year...?

My sleeping pattern for the past 5 / 6 yrs has decreased to approximately 1.5 to 2 hrs a day.It has got to the stage that if I sleep more than that, the following day I am nodding, as if I had never slept at all. I still feel best on 8 hours a night, but can get by on as little as 6.  If I don't get 8, I need to "tank up" on the weekend or it gradually wears me down.  You need sleep to recover and my body is still in recover mode.  It's okay, I have great dreams.

My brother is a millionaire.  He worked very hard to get there and still works hard.  He just kept trying different things until he found a few that work.  I'm heading for wealth in the coming years too (after making a recovery from financial devastation), but am not concerned with the amount of money.  I stay focused on how to get it and what I want to do with it.

Hi Chris,
Hope you are well; Missing your Sunday radio show.

Coming back to the average 2 hr sleep a day topic, My tutor rescheduled my timetable, saying "although you may be used to so few hours sleep, your brain, or in computer terms as he put it, your chip, is tired, shutting down, and you do need at least 5+ hrs a day or you will burn out"
I am following his advice, and do feel "fresh".

What I would like to know is, does the few hrs sleep, really lower ones concentration and memory abilities?
Regards

Hi Sherman

thanks for the nice comments about missing the show. We're beginning to talk about the new series now - which is a good sign !

What would be really helpful would be to have to requests / recommendations for topics and or guest speakers to include on the programme. We'll then see what we can do.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for reply.

Two of the subjects that I would certainly would like to be covered are the ones on weight gain and sleep. There is probably more to it than whats stated in books/articles etc. Would like to hear what the opinions of the experts from different angles.

It is doubtful that I am the only one with the above mentioned traits.

Regards
Sherman

They have helpfully provided their email address - gethealed@sakthifoundation.org - I'm sure they'd like some spam to waste their time, since they obviously have too much of it on their hands.

there can be good reasons for high metabolism, which to me seems to be the underlying problem. many people are hyperactive due to food allergies, mainly additives (the deaded E-numbers). also caffeine will increase your metabolism. there are probably a whole load of other foods out there which increase your metabolism too, which maybe you should try to cut down on. maybe you could try eating more foods that are known to help you sleep, I think milk is supposed to work, and lettuce.

Putting on weight is easy, just follow my simple diet planner:

Why not just eat a sensible breakfast, WITH LARD a healthy lunch, WITH LARD and then a good wholesome dinner WITH EXTRA LARD.

For added pounds, i would suggest snacking on fried bread generously coated with lard between meals.

There are some great lard recipes here:

Hope this helps [;)]

Well, start by taking a multivitamin every night with dinner. Also, drink protein shakes. You can buy mixes at a store like ___. Increase your protein intake. Eat more lean meats and cheeses and eggs. You want lean weight to turn into muscle. Excercise with your new diet. Drink lots and lots of water to stay hydrated properly. A glass of milk a day would help as well. Cut out your fatty foods and sweets. They just make fat wich will make it harder for you to gain muscle.
