People still remember what happened the year the potatoes wouldn't grow. Now imagine the consequences if that happened to the wheat or rice.

There is an epitaph in a New England graveyard praising a farmer who sowed barley in the year without a summer. Because barley has a short growing season, he saved the village from starvation.
