Why does exercising make me vomit?
« on: 30/09/2015 22:50:06 »
Tuomo Seppala asked the Naked Scientists:

I'm an active person and I do sports 6-8 times per week. Once in a while I feel nausea after exercise but not that often. Generally I'm fine even after heavy exercise. But earlier today after light weight training in a gym followed by a relatively short bicycle ride (5miles) I vomited.

I understood that the vomit came because I maybe exercised too hard, but it made me think, why did I vomit?

I hadn't eaten anything abnormal nor drank any alcohol or any abnormal substance.

My question is, why my body is dumping usable energy?

Thank you for your comments. A big fan from Finland.

What do you think?

Without much information to go on, I propose a few potential answers:

- You don't need to eat anything abnormal to vomit; spoiled or contaminated food/drink is sufficient

- You could be sick (a stomach bug is more than sufficient to illicit vomiting)

- You may have overheated. I often feel ill during exercise if my body temperature gets too high. It's not so much an issue of over-exertion as it is of maintaining proper operating conditions for your body. I'm not sure why the heat makes me sick, but I think this is fairly widespread because a common way to treat nausea is to provide a cool breeze or to apply a cool, damp cloth to the forehead or back of the neck....

- You might be incredibly sick, and about to die at any moment, or it could also be just a fluke.

**disclaimer** I am not a medical doctor.

In addition to the items mentioned by ChiralSPO, you should be aware of any unusual heart rate , giddiness, temporary loss of sensation or speech. If you get those back off training and consult a GP.
Above all listen to your body and respect any warnings.
and the misguided shall lead the gullible,
the feebleminded have inherited the earth.

I would also like to add that an infection of or damage to the ear can cause vertigo which can result in vomiting. I didn't mention it at first because you did not mention being dizzy, but for all the other readers out there: take care of your ears!
