I'm just posting here real quick in addition to on the POISforums where I usually post.  I have had trouble getting a niacin flush, and have recently tried 3 grams (GRAMS) and had very little sensation of flush.  It seems critical for my treatment to have a flush.  I usually wait 20 minutes after flush (30 minutes?) before O.  I read that some here wait 60 minutes.  I will try that next.

I really don't want to become desensitized to niacin, but I am 25 and my sex drive is hard to deal with!!

Hi,

Last week I posted that I am suspecting the long term effects of Chickenpox may be lead to POIS.  I have taken medicines used for healing chickenpox.  But none of them worked for POIS.

Interestingly, I observed another symptoms that will increase POIS effects me.  If I drunk Coconut water in POIS period my symptoms of POIS will increase and it will reach worst.  I drunk coconut water  in 4th day after "o" and the symptoms of POIS is increased worst like 2nd day.  During NOn-POIS days drinking of cocount water is not cause anything to me.  But if I drunk in POIS days, the POIS symptoms will increase and I feel like a some Bacteria / virus is growing in my body and If I drunk 2 or 3 coconut water, I will suffer throat infection on that day.

Does any one observed this symptom?.

weird, coconut water actually makes me feel a bit livelier. How many people will be part of the first Nord research, assuming we find the extra money? Perhaps there are different kinds of POIS.

I support this hypothesis as well as my POIS started right after chickenpox (i was 21 years old). I have created a poll that asks if you had a chickenpox as a child or an adult: newbielink:https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dGQ5NFh5XzM3b0VLVGZBQk1XU240elE6MQ [nonactive] and encourage forum members to answer it so we will be able to say if the ration between us and healthy people in terms of chickenpox virus is the same.

Since many of us may have similar questions that can help to gather some statistics about POIS I also to created a poll that can be edited by anyone so if you can contribute to this poll with some question please feel free to do so: newbielink:https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/gform?key=0AjR9YCwateRQdDF3ancwZndRWFBOT29CbFJLYVBYOVE&gridId=0#edit [nonactive]

Just click "Add item" in the left top corner, choose type of a question and fill the inputs.

why isnt their a Facebook page?

Hi Defsync,
Thanks for the thought. Actually, as Vincent Marcus pointed out to me a while back, there are actually two Facebook pages!

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Post-Orgasmic-Illness-Syndrome/129914263717751
and
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Post-Orgasmic-Illness-Syndrome-POIS/175719769110249

Didn't realise POIS has a facebook page. Thanks whoever did that. Not sure how many sufferers would be comfortable "liking" it on facebook though. 20 people have so far - don't know if they are sufferers or not
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Post-Orgasmic-Illness-Syndrome/129914263717751

There are actually 2 POIS groups on facebook that I know of. Well one is just a page I guess, but this is the link to it: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Post-Orgasmic-Illness-Syndrome-POIS/175719769110249

I made an alternate facebook account to "like" and join the groups.

Personally, I haven't joined either page. I can count on one hand the number of friends who know about my POIS and still have a finger left over. I'm not ready I don't think for everyone to know about my POIS. I do have some other friends who I'd be comfortable telling though. On that topic, if someone is reading this who hasn't told anyone at all about his POIS and is wondering about telling a close friend, well in my experience its a good thing to confide in some one. Its not such a big deal. People who care about you are understanding. It can seem like a huge step telling someone but in my experience it works out well and isn't an ordeal at all when you've done it, its a positive thing.

Of course having people who know about POIS and who are understanding is also a big part of what this forum does for all of us.

Click here to see The Now-Famous POIS Reddit Post (should we include this in the Welcome Post to newcomers?)

I don't think it does any harm to include it. Along with the mention of Girlwind's video, the tv shows, the NIH listing etc, it helps show that, as well as being a support group, we are pro-actively trying to raise the profile of POIS and improve our understanding of it. If someone joins our group and from the start is presented with the mind-set that we are a pro-active group, that can only encourage them to get down and contribute ideas and actions themselves. The other thing about reddit in terms of a newcomer seeing it is that it contains reactions from non-POIS sufferers, the vast majority of which are sympathetic/understanding. It shows how people perceive our condition. It also emphasises that POIS is one rare illness amongst many that exist and it needs to be tackled as such - by raising awareness, securing funds and carrying out research.

I had POIS since puberty and had a chickenpox in adult age, several years after I had POIS already

I saw Dr Goldmeier today, a POIS specialist, i found him very easy to get on with.
He asked my symptoms and some general physical and mental health questions.
This is what he recommended after listening to my particular presentation:
*He thought that my general state of anxiety meant that orgasm plummeted me to a state of exhaustion which i could take on board, he suggested a book and the practice of mindfulness meditation to dela with the anc=xiety and bring about a more level state.
*Blood tests to determine levels of various things in my bloodstream - results in ten days.
* An antihistamine called Levatra that we agreed i could start if necessary after 8 weeks or so of the mindfulness practice.
* having neuropyschogical tests pre and post orgasm.
* seeing an immunologist when an appointment comes up in 2 months time. i suffer from tree pollen, animal fur, dairy allergy so various tests will be performed.

I feel very pleased with these actions, the British N.H.S. is truly wonderful, all these services free at point of delivery.

Dr Goldmeier said it seemed that my case was not as severe as some he had seen, I agreed that i had read what appeared to be more severe stories on the forum. He did not give definitive answers as to what caused POIS or say that he believed that any partiuclar anti-POIS strategy i was using was definitely working.
I believe however that Zinc supplements, Niacin (Flushing type -100mg) taken at a certain point before orgasm, gentle exercise and a new wonderful sexual relationship were all helping mitigate the effects of POIS.

I think its worth noting that this year my usual tree pollen allergy (hazel, cherry, laurel) has not started. This would usually be in full flow in April with debilitating effects similar to POIS. The only thing i can think of that is different this year is Niacin supplementation - 100 mg, probably 2 or 3 times a week and that this is somehow effecting the histamine in my body.

Anyway, i am happy to report all this and hope that the work Dr Goldmeier does with me advances the knowledge base about POIS. We will crack this together boys!!

Great news badgerstripe! I am starting my 4th week of the 8 week mindful meditation course (same book I think: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Mindfulness-practical-guide-finding-frantic/dp/074995308X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1333696953&sr=8-1)

I have an antihistamine to test too - probably the same one - but am waiting for a non-POIS health issue to clear before trying it.

Really glad you went to Dr Goldmeier and thanks for reporting back. Good luck!

As I've said before, Dr G is willing to see anyone with POIS from the UK. (He's seen one or two POIS sufferers from other countries in Europe too).

Hello,

I shared some of things that bring some pois relief to me (p.660). It is especially stretching, or loosening of pelvic floor and strengthening of deep abdomen muscles. I suppose tail bone is affected too.

Did anyone have similar relief through this? Is it worth exploring further?

Niacin (with flush affect) is not available in my country. Under what name is it distributed in the US?

Do you live in the U.S.? Then i think it would be easy for you to find niacin in your country. Vincent Marcus could help you, because he lives in the U.S., but i am buying the niacin Solgar 100 mg- A brand from the U.S., representing Nature´s bounty?- in Spain. So you could try in any Wal-mart if you are living in the U.S.

Regards

Thanks for advice. I actually live in Europe. I will look for Solgar. Any other non time release brands available in Europe?

Someone mentioned that the most effective form of Niacin is nicotinic acid, not the nicotineamid. Does Solgar provide nicotinic acid form?

Yep, solgar provides the nicotinic acid form.

Hi everyone,

10 days back, I decided to not to have orgasm for next one or one and half month and I wanted to see how I will be free in Non-POIS period.

In this forum, I read that Niacin will reduce the POIS symptoms.  In our area, Niacin tablets is not available.  Hence I decided to use B.Complex (which contain Niacin) tablets instead of Niacin.  11 days back i decided to have orgasm and I have taken B.complex tablets 4 hours before the orgasm.  After 4 hours of orgasm, I took another B.complex tablet.  Further I also used Garlic.    In the first day of orgasm, I noticed reduction in POIS symptoms and I recovered from POIS symptoms in just 3 and half days completely.  From fourth day onwards I am completely relived from POIS symptoms and I started enjoying the days (after long time in my life) and i got peace in my mind.  From the fourth day I started meeting with my old friends and spend a time with them.  During these days, I was very happy, my concentration level is very high with good memory power and I was enjoying the days.
Yesterday, it was my 10th day after "O" and I gone to movie with my friends in a very good mood and enjoyment.  In the beginning of the movie, my mind has calmness, good concentration level and happiness exist.

In the middle of  movie there was a Romantic scene and Sexual scene for 5 minutes.   While watching the scene I was normal and I did't observed any thing at that time.  But after coming out from the theater I was experienced the first day of POIS symptoms.  I did't able to drive cleraly while going to home and my mind started to exhaust and my concentration level and memory power hit a worst and in the night (during sleep) i got many dreams (I usually got more dreams in POIS period, i don't know the reason why it is like this, I can say it is excessive dreaming that will happen in POIS period).   Today the symptoms reached worst.  The symptoms were same as second day after "O" and now it is confirmed for me that I experiencing POIS symptoms without had "O" and these symptoms triggered by just watching a 4 minutes romance and Sexual scene in a movie.

Hi, does anyone has experienced this? and how POIS triggered by just watching a sexual scene in a movie.

Hi Nathan123,

I believe that a few men have posted here (or on the SMF site) that sexual stimulation without the ejaculation does bring on POIS symptoms.

Hi Nathan123,

I believe that a few men have posted here (or on the SMF site) that sexual stimulation without the ejaculation does bring on POIS symptoms.

Yes sometimes sexual stimulation does bring on symptoms (for me) and sometimes it doesn't.  The stimulation does bring on an "excited" state in the body which is not going to promote calmness and relaxation and hence a POIS state might emerge.  Plus even seeing that sexual scene in the theater might startle you and lead to an anxious-like POIS response just by thinking about sex and the consequences of having it.

Lately I've been having success with vitamin C in bigger dosages, I take 1500 mg in the morning and a claritin at night and I seem to be doing very well.  Sometimes after "O" POIS will be there to a certain extent which is not as debilitating as my O's previously, and sometimes I will be totally cleared of it and not feel it at all.  My "O" plan is "O'ing" about 3 times a week with all "O's" during the same night.

I'm not sure if we made the donation amount or not but either way it is a very big step.  If we didn't make it this year we have a VERY big shot of making it the next.  We are definitely headed in the right direction.

I won't go into details, but I also will have on an occasion a milder form of Pois if I watch sexually graphic videos for over a coupe of hours even without having an O.Strangely if I can have the willpower. to watch only a couple hours of these videos I feel a sense of relaxation, and a sense of mild euphoria .If I watch too much I will get strong heart palpitaions, feel very dizzy, moderate fatigue and a general spacyness that lasts for about as long as an O,though as I said the effects aren't nearly as strong as when I have an O. Its almost like I develop a milder version of the effects an O as I feel some of the good things that immediately come after an O such as the euphoria, wellbeing, but then the spaciness ,brainfog, and moodiness come in at a albeit at less intensity.

Pornographic videos have an overall negative effect, and I certainly don't condone or encourage people with Pois watching as it definitely encourages and tempts them to have an O. Unfortunately human beings are very sexual creates and it can be quite hard to resist the sexual urges when they come on

Hey guys, I read through most of this forum and I fully support you guys. I'm 19 and this illness is devastating my life, to top it off I have a massive sex drive. I've done research on my symptoms and I linked it to being overweight, lazyness, video games, and overmastubation(I'm talking 6-7 times in a day) but recently I learned that it was just the orgasms giving me this terrible feeling. Since my mid teens I've been always trying to figure out what was wrong with me, because I'm always tired, can't think clearly most of the time, have bad social skills with people and can't connect emotionally or say the right words, depression, and anxiety. Even though I understand them completely this horrible fatigue prevents me from saying what I really wan't to say and how I say it. It's like I feel weak, I speak in a low tone, I can't even bring myself to yell and most of the time there's a akward silence and I feel I always leave bad impressions on people because of how I talk and how I am, which I hate because I know that's not who I am. My student record is horrifying and I'm finally graduation this June. Basically I feel out of place in this world.
Anyways last month I decided to stop masturbating for extra energy to support my workout regime and in 1 week I was thinking clearly, feeling AMAZING, talking to everything and wasn't afraid to do it, I felt like I belonged and that I wasted so much time and felt I could do anything. I realized that having orgasms had the crippling effect that gave me all these symptoms and had me like this since I was 15. So, I planned to avoid all sexual content and work on myself to better my relationships with friends and family and things were looking good until last week.
I had a wetdream AND ALL SYMPTOMS came back, on top of that I felt a sex craze from iy and continued doing it for most of last weekend so I feeling pretty horrible now but I won't fail myself again, i'll control myself until I can treat this thing properly, so thanks again for everyone getting this noticed I'll donate when I can and support yall every step of the way.

Thanks.

In addition to serving our own informational interests, the resources listed above can be useful for you to show our credibility to the medical world - which often shows little understanding and is sometimes skeptical of our condition: POIS has scientific underpinnings and POIS is not "just another psychological problem" related to sex - to be treated by the psychiatric/psychotherapeutic community. All of this information can greatly help you to fight the immediate reaction of some doctors: so just tell them, "IT'S NOT 'ALL IN OUR HEADS'! "

It can be very  helpful to you when dealing with medical professionals to point out the
POIS' official listing, as recognized by the
National Institutes for Health (NIH), Office of Rare Diseases Research
:

And in Europe: Orphanet now lists POIS on their website! - Click here!

POIS also appears in credible medical sources such as the Journal of Sexual Medicine (Dr. Waldinger's study), British Medical Journal and wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Postorgasmic_illness_syndrome

For over 4 years, our POIS forum has attracted over 200 POIS sufferers worldwide who have posted here, research on an additional 200 sufferers elsewhere on the internet, plus our pages have been read nearly 2,000,000 times! Not bad for a rare malady!

SEARCH THE FORUM WITH GOOGLE

We have an overwhelming amount of data: more than 4 years' worth of posts (over  10,000 posts!) from 200+ Forum members, and an additional 200 POIS sufferers found elsewhere on the Internet by Member B_Jim.

In the Google search box, type
whatever-it-is-you're-interested-in-finding-out[space]POIS[space]site:http://thenakedscientists.com/

for example, I tried
nocturnal emission POIS site:http://thenakedscientists.com/

and 740 results came up for "nocturnal emission" within the Forum.

be careful with spaces (you can use them before the word "site") and no-spaces (everything after the word "site")

Google even provides you results with the Message# for each result. But Message #'s do change, so be patient and look for the approximate Message#.

" Hi, does anyone has experienced this? and how POIS triggered by just watching a sexual scene in a movie."

To answer your question YES! I have experienced POIS without orgasm!

In addition to POIS, I have lost all semen before I lost ability to ejaculate any more. My wife an I avoid all sexual contact usually...  Twice in the last year we got amorous and I got really turned on.  On both occasions, I came down with brain fog, headache, body aches, pelvic pain, reduced urology flow and function for several days afterwards.

Since I have no semen, not even leakage, it can't be an allergy to semen.  I do leak Cowper's gland lubricant with long and intense excitation.  Never have been able to prove that retrograde ejaculation is occurring.

I'm reporting my experience to maybe jogged some docs or researchers imagination to find a cure for POIS!

I take Lyrica, Cymbalta, Cardura, Finasteride, B-12 injections, allergy shots, low PSA, sjogren's syndrom

Living in Taiwan, it can be rather difficult to express the discomfort this gives me. So here is a Chinese description of POIS:

I am 21 years old. I have POIS-like symptoms since puberty.

After discovering the term POIS last night, I also discovered the term Somatization Disorder.
I believe the symptoms of POIS and Somatization Disorder are similar.
I tried to solve Somatization Disorder, I ended up eliminate my POIS-like symptoms last night by doing two things.

(1) Physically: I breathe heavily while ejaculating.
(2) Mentally: I finished the first part of Mood Gym. newbielink:http://moodgym.anu.edu.au/welcome [nonactive]

Maybe you can try this.

NEWS ABOUT POIS AUSTRALIA ABC TV DOCUMENTARY!

Getting scientific about sex
From http://www.starobserver.com.au/life-style/body-life-style/2012/04/11/getting-scientific-about-sex/75546

Posted on 11 April 2012

The Royal Institution of Australia (RiAus), in collaboration with ABC TV’s Catalyst program, will host a special event examining the ins and outs of the modern human’s sexuality.

This live event will commence with an advanced screening of a new Catalyst special about sex, which examines two rare sexual conditions – persistent genital arousal disorder and post orgasmic illness syndrome.

“This event is shaping up to be one of our most interesting, it’s clear that a lot of people out there have a lot to say about sex, and a lot to ask,” said RiAus programs coordinator Deb Shaw.

“Dr Maryanne Demasi from Catalyst will be discussing her experience in making the TV program and the guests will carry out a general discussion of some of the more well-known and common sexual dysfunctions – libido, inability to achieve orgasm, erectile problems, unmatched desire etc – and why talking about them appears to be so taboo.”

Shaw said their ‘sexperts’ will be called upon to discuss their experiences as counsellors and medical practitioners and why people find talking about sex and sexual problems so difficult.

“Physical and virtual audience members will also be able to post their own questions during the event for discussion,” she said.

“We’ve already had people posting questions on our event website and people can keep doing this ahead of the event, it’s totally anonymous and is already throwing up a huge number of really interesting questions and comments.

“Most people are doing it but a lot of people find it incredibly difficult to talk about, that’s why we thought this was such an important event. Sex ultimately sits at the centre of our society and is fundamental for us as a species.”

Panellists for the event include Catalyst‘s Dr Maryanne Demasi, Sexologist Dr Patricia Weerakoon, and clinical psychologist Alan Jenkins.

It’s on
Thursday April 12
from 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm
AUSTRALIA TIME

at The Science Exchange, Exchange Place, Adelaide.

For current local time in Adelaide, Australia:
http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/city.html?n=5

The event will be livestreamed via www.riaus.org.au/livestreaming

I have experienced this on a couple of occasions and dont view really explicit adult content on purpose anymore.  If you believe in Dr. Waldingers theory this could be easily explained by pre-ejaculatory fluid priming the ducting in your urethra and other reproductive lumens.  It is not necessary to see pre-ejaculatory fluid leaking from the penis for it to be present internally all throughout the ejaculatory ducting.

Hi all

(Good information for doctors)
I am a new guest ,
I was suffering from pois long time ago,

The reason why I am a POIS  sufferer is that I used to do hand masturbating several times per a day.
when I get married I think the symptoms will disappear, but it was not,

* If I had sex with my wife at late night and go to sleep so in the morning the symptoms are little, but if I do in the other times the symptoms are very sharp,
* If I had sex with my wife in the morning then the symptoms will be more severe than any other times .
* The symptoms appears when : 1. thinking about sex 2. see women 3. speak about sex
4. seed 5.make love with my wife.

Believe me the reason of POIS is hand masturbating, and if a man remains to have sex with awoman then he will be ok even he had much sex per aday.so why ...
Please doctors give us atreatment.
