Does coffee increase motivation?
« on: 11/05/2016 11:50:01 »
Al Bixby asked the Naked Scientists:
I'm not sure you can answer this one but here it is. I am a writer and when I drink coffee my mind is exploding with ideas and I am motivated to write. But now that I've been off coffee for many months, I wake up and am nowhere near as motivated or am I coming up with as many ideas. I'm sort of thinking that I'm low on dopamine. Is that possible and is there a substance that I could take that will help me be better?
What do you think?

Why did you stop drinking coffee?

Nonetheless, through the mechanism of A2A receptor antagonism - caffeine promotes wakefulness, induces locomotor stimulation, enhances BDNF mRNA expression, increases striatal dopamine release, ect. Great stuff!

I think any substance that produces dopamine encourages us.

We've looked at the science of caffeine and coffee quite a bit recently.

Julia Turan wrote an excellent article about the pharmacology and health effects of caffeine, and we devoted an episode of the Naked Scientists podcast to the subject of caffeine and coffee early in 2016.

These might provide useful background.
