Do my fellow posters find the continual updates of windows 10 as annoying as me?
« on: 17/07/2016 20:47:16 »
Almost every day Redmond send me a new update for windows 10 which puts the computer out of action for about an hour and necessitates me re-installing various drivers that go missing, I know the answer is to move to the slow lane but then you feel you are missing something.
The stock answer is to move to Linux I tried putting columbine in a new partition but it was a bit of a disaster having Linux and windows on the one drive

I haven't had very many disturbing updates; the odd one, but not sufficient to cause me to break a sweat or shout obscenities at Microsoft.

Regarding Linux, I have two XP machines set up to dual boot. That was achieved painlessly. But I tried to dual boot my Win 10 install on a m.2 PCI based new-build about 6 months ago with Debian 7 and it failed every time. GRUB wasn't having any of it. I don't know if it was the m.2 that was causing the problem, or Windows 10, or the UEFI at startup.  It might just be a problem with the newness of the technology that will resolve with time. I am loathe to fiddle again now because every time the Debian install goes wrong it takes down the Windows install with it, and that's hours of my time invested reinstalling the whole shooting match...

Good luck!

That is what you get for installing skynet 10. If you look over your shoulder and see a big guy in leather on a motorbike run like hell. Alternatively you could just revert to skynet 8. It has pretty and hypnotically mesmerising tiles.

My main machines are on Win 7 and 10, but I have a couple of elderly stations that run high quality audio hardware built for XP and for which support has not been extended through Windows 7 and beyond. So I have those machines hived off on a separate subnet... However, I'll be upgrading the audio hardware soon anyway, so their days are numbered...

Is it worth upgrading to Windows 10?

Is the native win32 api still supported in Windows 10?

I hardly find you annoying at all- except when you say "me" where you means "I do".

Apologies for bad grammar I missed out on the grammar school exam due to poor health and was shuttled off to the technical school instead , I try to improve but it is a slow process.

Why pour, poor, pore just to confuse the uneducated ?

The Redmond crowd appears to have shutdown the connection that enabled you to use older versions of outlook presumably to make you buy version 365, I can still get my NTL email thru outlook 2010 but not my windows one that I normally use , also windows live essentials no longer works.
I have drives that can be transplanted into the computer that have the outlook 2010 configuration on them but they cause problems with fast track system upload by telling it to upload to the latest version , messing about for an hour then reverting to the original version.
Bring back XP!

You have to persevere with windows 10 and learn to love some of the new programs, mail is quite good when you get used to it and edge is good and fast except that it does not work as well with ad blocker as well as IE11 does, the video player is good but you still need VLC if you want to add sub titles and play files with weak sound and Acrobat and Photoshop still work OK while the built in anti virus is good.
The most annoying thing is my Arcsoft TV dongle won't run any longer but perhaps a different one will.
I have "discovered" Thunderbird an excellent Email program, technology does not stand still you have to go with the times you can't live in the past.

Once again I lost the stereo sound on my lap top after an update. I have fixed it in the past, but no the tabs I used previously to fix it are missing.

Just an update that might be useful for Windows problems other than the one I had:

I followed these instructions despite scary Windows warnings that I probably shouldn't.: The interesting thing is - it got me the "diable enhancements tab" back that another site said I needed to turn off in order to fix the problem, but it also immediately fixed the lack of stereo problem simply by replacing the Realtek audio driver with the Windows one. It said this method can be often used where there are conflicts between the drivers that come with your particular brand of computer and Windows, so it might actually be helpful for other issues as well, or I wouldnt have bothered boring you all with it.

Method 2: If you are using Realtek Audio (Card/Drivers)
Fire up the pop-menu above the start button by pressing “Windows key + X”
Select “Device manager” from the list.
Now go to the “Sound, video and game controllers” section.
Here, you should search for “Realtek High Definition Audio” under the list of audio device drivers. Right click and select “Disable”.
Right click again and this time click on “Update driver software”
Opt for “Browse my computer for driver software”
Now go for “Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer”
A window asking you to select the driver that you want to install for the device should now appear.
You might see a list of available drivers. Click on “High definition audio device” and then hit “Next”
When asked, select “Yes” and a confirmation window should appear indicating that the process has completed.
When asked to reboot, say yes.

We have essentially just replaced the Realtek audio drivers with the default high definition audio device drivers for windows and this should get you the enhancements tab back! Enjoy!
