Ralph Call asked the Naked Scientists:
Are there existing observations of physical processes that would explain the hexagonal shaped craters on Mars, Mercury, Titan and Eros?
What do you think?

Hexagonal packing is characteristic of circular or near-circular objects (such as bee cells, chaldera and impact craters) close to one another, and also of convection cells in cooling magma - such as the Giants Causeway.
