Do people have instincts?
« on: 03/08/2018 09:05:26 »
Evgeniya wants to know:

Do people have instincts? Or do we just have unconditioned and conditioned reflexes?

What do you think?

Yes, we have instincts. You don't have to learn that you want to eat when you are hungry. Eating, however, is not a reflex. It's possible to override the urge to eat.

Since all animals that we have observed have instincts it would be surprising if humans were the only animal not to. So it is no surprise that when we look for instinctive behaviour in humans we find it.

Because those that benefited from having instincts produced more offspring's that survived to breed than those who lacked them.

Hey. You asked a very difficult question. I think there will be different answers, even the opposite.
Intuition comes to us from an instinctive feeling, and not from conscious reasoning. Intuition is our inner perception and is based on past knowledge and experience. We all experience intuition. Sometimes he finds the answer to a question or knows the correct solutions to the problem. Ideas simply appear from our unconscious before we can give them confidence.

We can listen to our inner feelings: trust our instincts. Or consciously revise and ask the question: use logical reasoning.
The reliability of our intuition largely depends on past knowledge and concrete experience.
However, a lack of intuition - and logical reasoning in this respect - is a tendency to bias and a tendency to ignore some facts. For these reasons, we must choose when to trust our instincts and when to use reasoning.

I think more pronounced in children. Although the border of the reflex and instinct is very thin.
These instincts are all about survival. Rub your baby's cheek and it will turn to your touch with your mouth open.
Placed face down, your child turns his head to the side, ensuring that he can breathe. And although on his back, if the blanket falls over his head, he will turn his head and cling to his hands to push him away from his face - a potential rescuer.

Yes! Well I guess to have unconditioned and conditioned reflexes were considered part of our instinct too.

Of course humans have instincts. However, I think what sets us apart is that we can also rationalize or train ourselves to overcome our instinctual responses. The opposite, as in, strengthening our instinct is also possible. The latter is also possible in other animals. Learned behavior definitely strengthens a specific response.
