Is there an observatory of innovation, patents, research, etc that can gather all the advances in medicine, science etc?

I found this snippet of information very useful in a conversation about 2 weeks ago - one of my colleagues has a property with lots of wombats, and another colleague asked "How do you know?"...

But among the wombat poo on The Naked Scientists, you will find a summary of interesting current research.
