Would VR cause human extinction?
« on: 27/09/2019 12:22:01 »
f we have full dive VR would there still be people living in real life apart from poeple who maintain the VR equipment ? I am referring to VR brain implants/BCIs not VR headsets, googles, etc

If you were to give a rough estimate what percentage of people would stay in the real world instead of using these devices? 1 Percent maybe

Thanks

If use of one of these devices renders one non-participatory in the real world, the remaining percentage would need to breed at the inverse of that percentage in order for the race to survive.
So if 99% of people bow out of the gene pool by going VR, the 1% remaining need at least 200 children each in order for the human race to survive.  I think they'll be too busy with that to bother keeping the zombies happy.

Maybe it's only something you do as a sort of glorious end-of-life thing, sort of like they depict in Soylent Green when Book decides he's lived enough.  In that case, everybody can do it.  The work (or the breeding) need not be done by anybody left behind.  Such task are performed by those who simply haven't done it yet.

Ask an addict of any product. If the sensation is better than reality, people will go for the sensation. The experiment has been done with rats, which starved to death by triggering the "pleasure" implant instead of the "food" switch. And few people have the survival skills of a rat.

No need for a complicated gadget: the rats had a single electrode implanted. Heroin works just as well.
