How to reduce aluminum melting point?
« on: 04/08/2020 10:31:34 »
Hi

I want to try melting aluminum metal in a charcoal foundry without using an air blower. What chemicals can I use as flux to reduce aluminum metal melting point so I can melt it with a bot lower temprrature?

Gracias

A flux won't lower the melting point.
Alloying it would, but that might spoil the other properties.

Alloying with what?

Essentially anything. Addition of any other metal will reduce the melting point of pure aluminium.

Bear in mind that aluminium is very reactive with oxygen, even at room temperature.

Heat aluminium to melting point, and it will be extremely reactive with oxygen in the air. You could end up with a lot of aluminium oxide, so consider using an inert atmosphere.

Somehow I doubt that many people who don't have an air blower for  aforge will have access to an inert gas cover system.

How much aluminium are you talking about?

One aluminium alloy left out of the list above is an amalgam of aluminum with mercury.

The mercury dissolves into the aluminium even at room temperature.

Due to alumium's reactivity with oxygen, if you do this in air, all you end up with is aluminium oxide:
Warning: Mercury is volatile and has invisible toxic fumes. Use gloves, and handle it in a fume cupboard.

I'm willing to bet that the OP is talking about some randomly chosen aluminium alloy with a melting range that makes it impossible to measure to 5 digits.

Fundamentally, a charcoal fire should melt aluminium (and its commercial alloys) with no real problems.
