Can a mechanical pencil cause lead poisoning?
« on: 05/11/2020 14:35:51 »
Michael asks:

I recently got poked by a mechanical pencil and caused my finger to bleed. Should I worry for lead poisoning?

Can you help?

Pencils (mechanical or not) are made of graphite, a form of carbon, not lead.  So no lead poisoning.
Pencil 'lead' is just a different definition of the word that does not mean element 82.

Apparently, the name has stuck since a misinterpretation of the chemistry back in the 16th century.
- Back then, chemistry was barely distinguishable from alchemy
- And astronomy was barely distinguishable from astrology...

Anyone who had discovered fire  could tell the difference between graphite and lead.
However they have an important characteristic in common.
You can write on paper with them.
