At a high level, it is studied by psychologists as a behavior.
- At a mid level, it is stored in certain structures in the brain
- At a low level, It involves strengthening or weakening the connections between neurons at synapses.
- There is still a significant gap in our knowledge about how the low level behavior produces the high-level behavior, so don't expect an exact answer this decade!
- Biologists often use model organisms like the 1mm-long worm c elegans to study memory and learning. These creatures are so small that it is possible to count the individual neurones in their nervous systems.

In humans, patterns of connections in the hippocampus can store episodic memory; there are other types of memory, stored in other parts of the brain.

Most of our brain connections are subconscious, and are learnings that cannot be retrieved to the conscious mind (but we can see them in action as we speak, walk, eat and work).
