How much does looks play a part in a musician's success?
« on: 12/01/2021 19:54:57 »
Noel Gallagher was once asked why they kept Liam in their band (Oasis) when he apparently brought very little to their outfit. He didn't write any of the music, he was unreliable for rehearsals, he would sometimes perform intoxicated, start fights, make salacious comments about his bandmates' wives, and was not above bad mouthing his bandmates in the press. Noel's answer was straight forward: he's good looking.

Whatever brings the crowds in. Spitting at the audience never hurt a punk band, and whilst playing classical piano is all about arms and hands, female pianists with good legs always wear a dress slit up to the hip for live gigs.

Asked how long it takes to dress her hair for a performance, Dolly Parton said "I don't know - I'm never there."  And more famously "It costs a fortune to look this cheap."

In this style, the behavior of musicians is very natural, they must correspond to a rebellious spirit

First off I apologize for my bad english, :(

but I think if you have less talent these days, looks play a big role, especially for marketing and artist role.

But there are examples, such as Sia.

She is a very talented woman and brings out one hit singles one after the other, but she never shows herself in front of the camera, ´. Her symbol is just the little girl with the wig. She doesn't market her looks, just her voice.

Best regards Nina

I think nowadays it is more important that you are talented, than what you look like. Sex will always sells, but Musicians like Billy Elish show that they don't want to be reduced on how they look like.
Best regards, Einstein

Hi,

first of all, looks don't matter to every single person. In a band every member has their particular role or part to play. I think, that he made a joke when he was being asked about keeping Liam in the band. If he would have left, they maybe wouldn't have created their music. I know it is hard to imagine, but in many cases it's all about the little details that help to finish the process.

What about Freddie Mercury? He had a strange look. But he was a one of a kind and truly unique. So I would recommend to rethink your question.
