Technology can be used to measure the extent of desertification
« on: 28/01/2021 08:43:49 »
Desertification is a type of degradation of land in which the land becomes more arid. Desertification is a direct result of global warming, and approximately 12 million hectares of productive land becomes barren due to desertification annually. Remote sensing technology can be used to measure the extent of desertification. Could you ever thought that in order to fix that stuff scientists start to use satellite technology which helps scientists observe the land?

Observation is often easier than manipulation.
- You can observe the melting ice pack of Greenland via remote sensing, without using much energy (the observation is solar-powered, and can be observed with a telescope only 15 cm across)
- The melting is also solar-powered, but to control the solar power reaching Earth, you need a satellite perhaps 15,000 km across...
- The same satellite could perhaps reduce temperatures in the desert, which might encourage rain. Restoring soils takes a material input...

Have you heard of SWIMMR programme. The four year programme (2019-2023) is focusing on reducing the potential radiation hazards of space weather to satellites and aviation operations, mitigating potential space weather effects on communication and global positioning, as well as diminishing the potential risks of space weather to electric power distribution.
