Did you know that Gorillas can't swim?

Giraffes have only 7 vertibrae in their necks (the same as us)?

Glass is a liquid?

(I really hope these are right!)

I believe from my anthropology studies that you are correct with the gorilla's. I also seem to remember something about the glass, That is probably true also..but coming from sand it is hard to understand, I really don't know.... Interesting giraffe fact considering the length of their neck! I wonder how big the vertebrae are in comparison to ours. Must be quite large you would think!

It's the neck! Can't think of anything else that might look like that ;-) ! I also did art when I was at school, though drawing anatomically correct giraffes was never part of the sylabus! Plus it was...jeez....20 years ago!

They are incredible animals.. I am afraid I don't swim!

The Blue Whale is the largest animal ever to live on earth. It is even bigger than the largest dinosaur. The Blue Whale can grow to weigh as much as twenty-one African elephants. Most Blue whales travel or migrate. Blue whales have two blow holes. Blue whales can speak to each other over hundreds of miles away.

Glass is a liquid?

No it isn't.  This is a common misconception arising from various observations that didn't hold up.

One observation was that the glass at the bottom of older windows is thicker than the glass at the top.  Thus, the glass must flow down over time.  The real issue is that older windows weren't made as uniformly as newer windows, and it's easier to hang a window with the heavier part on the bottom, so it' bottom-heavy, not top-heavy.

Another is that glass rods bend over time, since if you have a stack of glass rods supported at the ends, by the time you get to the end of the stack, the rods are bent.  Actually, there's selection going on as people take the glass rods - they prefer the straight ones, leaving the bent ones behind.

In general, you have to be careful with these little tidbits of information that often circulate around the internet.  They are often wrong.  Another is example is the supposed color-blindness of dogs.  Everybody knows that dogs are color-blind, right?  Well, everybody is wrong.  I remember hearing a vision expert on some podcast in the last year discussing this matter (I think it was NPR's "Science Friday", but I'm not sure).

There are 2 types of giraffe - the Masai & the Reticulated - which can be differentiated by their markings.

Reticulated giraffe

Masai giraffe

As you can see, it's easy to spot the difference.

It's very easy to tell if the animal you are looking at is a giraffe, as shown by the following diagram...

Here is a list of what giraffes are called in foreign languages:-

French - giraffe
German - giraffe
Italian - giraffe
Portugese - giraffe
Spanish - giraffe
Dutch - giraf
Chinese - 长颈鹿
Japanese - キリン
Korean - 지라프
Swahili - twiga

OK, I stand corrected about the glass thing, though I didn't get the fact from a net-trawl. I'm also sure that I heard about it on the NS not long ago. However, another urban myth bites the dust! This link has a good science base to it about glass:

Beobab trees can reach 180 feet in circumference. If you hollow out the trunk, 20 people would be able to fit inside it.

The Hubble telescope transmits enough data every day to fill 10,000 CDs.

If you extracted all the gold from the oceans and seas, every person in the world would get about 20kgs each.

It would take twenty modern cars to generate the same amount of pollution that a 1960's car did.

In 1943 Thomas Watson, who was the chairman of IBM, predicted that their would only be a world demand for five computers.

The oldest tree in the world is the Bristle cone pine in California. It is called "Methuselah" and is 4,767 years old (you can tell the age of a tree by taking core samples, not just cutting it down!)

Ah, here we have a philosophical question about how old we really are. Most of our cells regenerate, and therefore much of our own bodies are not more than a decade or so old. With trees, the new growth goes onto the outside, a bit like a new coat, just under the bark, and so this part is only a year old. The further into the tree you go, the older it becomes, and so the only part that is 4767, is the very centre, ie., the first year it was alive.

(or is that really southern northern california??!!?)

I don't know if its location is generally known, for the protection of the tree. You never know what some people will do! BTW, aren't you also close to the Redwood forest - that must be a great thing to see!

Yes I am in the middle of it.. They have cut most of the ones down outside of my house over the last two months but I still have them To look at if I want to . there ar mor in the private property aras around me also. A mill bought the adjacent property and cut out th redwoods leaving pines scrub oaks pepperwood and brush... Looks funny out here right now.. the rains helped the brush growth and things are filling in, but it is weird.

I love the redwood forest it is awsome.. The ferns and trees and the amazing size of the trees are great!

Sorry bout my drag on that s.. LOL my pinkie must have hit it! LOL

Its ok! I guess you're a touch typer - better than me then, I'm just learning it - I still spend half the time looking at the keyboard!

It is a problem within forestry, that when an area of trees is felled, it can look pretty awful. But, usually natural regeneration of trees happens relatively quickly, and you get lots of lovely new growth. It might be part of a fire prevention policy too - do you get fires locally? Hear about it a lot in the news...

Do you have any pics of the forest near you?

Well We don't get many right here where I am. Just over the hill they get many more due to the trmendous heat duing the summer and the amount of camp grounds hikers etc. Most sre caused by neglect someone doesn't attend to a fire, or throws a ciggerette out the window into the bushes as if they can't use the ashtray in their dang cars! Makes me MAD! I have been behind people traveling who drive down the road throwing trash out of their car windows ... It makes me so mad!!

I have some piccys! I will post a couple I took for a friend! I will do it later as right now this dial up is too slow. There should be a repair person here before my doctor appointment ..I hope! LOL I have become a spoiled girl.. I like me high speed hook up! LOL
