Are fly zappers safe?
« on: 13/10/2021 15:37:42 »
Tarkey wrote to us to ask:

I am interested in getting a fly zapper. However, reading on line, it has been described as dangerous. When flies are zapped, they explode and emit a mist which contains nasty stuff, including E Coli. Is that true?

What do you think?

Don't put your fingers in te zapper, or it won't feel safe to you, either.

If you put the zapper a little away from where you are sitting, any bacteria that did not get evaporated or punctured will be diluted before they reach you.

Or you could be a little more active - I've seen some fly zappers shaped like a ping-pong bat. You try to swat the fly, and as it jumps away, it gets zapped. You are closer to the zap, but being more active is good for you, too.

Better to have the E coli fried at a distance than vomited onto your dinner by a live fly.

Is there any country that ban it?
If not, then it's not considered dangerous enough.

This is the first time I've heard of it, it's really interesting.

What is the safe distance for this?
