Spirit Level Bubbles ?
« on: 19/07/2007 12:06:32 »
Hi Peeps Of Individual Talents & Skills,

Here is my Spirit Level...it's cool isn't it ?

Notice how non level my surface is and praticularly how 'single ' bubbled the bubble is ?

 [ Invalid Attachment ]

How come ...as much as I try to shake it hard and fast..the bubble always remains intact ?

That's a sexy pen! (It is a pen, isn't it...).

Does it mean you can see if you're writing with a level-headed approach?

The liquid inside is an oily product, I think, and so perhaps harder to break the surface tension?

THANK YOU DENTSTUDENT ( what's yor name ?)

yes it is a pen !...It's a special edition from a  UK Hi Fi Company called Musical Fidelity...it's well sturdy !

Hmmmm..I see....I can understand that an oily liquid would indeed be difficult to shatter !

LOL !!...yes..it helps me write in parallel !! when I brave non lined paper !!

It's actually very handy for making sure my turntable and speakers are correcly aligned !

THANK YOU

However, with further research I see that it is infact ALCOHOLIC! It is "usually a yellow coloured 'spirit' (a synonym for ethanol), leaving a bubble in the tube. Ethanol is used because of its low freezing point, −114°C, which prevents it from freezing in cold weather. Most commonly, spirit levels are employed to indicate how horizontal (level) or how vertical (plumb) a surface is."

Ah, 20 questions eh?

You're close with the dendrochronology bit - I'm actually studying a sort of dendroclimatology, but because I'm using annual height growth, it isn't "dendro" in the commonly used sense. My tag comes from HHGTTG "dentaurthurdent" as stated by Slartibartfast, but as I'm "Stuart", but also a "STUdent" I thought it would be appropriate. It works on so many levels!

Spirit Level Bubbles ?

The reason is that alcohol has a very low viscosity and a reasonably high surface tension so any bubble that forms drains down and bursts quite quickly like bubbles on very clean water.  There is also not much room in the tube to get violent motion going and break up the single bubble into multiple bubbles
