Which horse on a merry go round is fastest?

This is a merry go round

Possibly the only ride i dare go on. But which horse goes fastest (the one to avoid) the one on the inside or the one on the outside? Would i actually notice any difference, if there is any?

The 1 on the outside would travel slightly faster. The circle it describes is larger (it is further from the centre of rotation) but it must still go round in the same time. Further to travel in the same time means the speed must be greater.

This question is so simple I think it must be a trick of some sort!
I look forward to what the general relativity and quantum mechanics experts will make of it.

In terms of linear speed, the one on the outside has greater linear speed.  In terms of angular speed, there is no difference.

In terms of safety, I think I'd rather be on the horse on the outside, because if you do fall off, you have empty space to fall into, rather than getting caught in the mechanisms of the merry go round (falling off is never a problem - it is what you fall into that is ever the problem).

Indeed, George. Falling into merry-go-round horse poo is not pleasant  [:D]

The fastest that the horses on a merry go round travel is when they are on a lorry when the fair is moving from one site to another. In that case the horses all travel at the same speed.

If we define speed as distance travelled relative to the alighting point divided time elapsed between getting on and getting off the distance travelled could be greater for a horse on the inner ring than one on the outer ring depending on the angular separation
