Dear Earth Experts,

This is the Earth:

Nice isn't it ?  notice how non-floating in a puddle it is ?

If I could dunk it in a bucket or a puddle would it float like an apple or sink like a stone ?

I can't empirically research this ! [;)]

THANKS

Neil

I can't see your picture. I looked and I see that you have a picture inside, but it is not showing!!

The mass of the Earth is 6*10^24 Kg so the density works out at approx 5.5 gm/cm^3 hence it would sink like a stone.
There is one planet that would float, of the top of my head I think it is Uranus but I may be wrong.

Yes. The Earth is a large globe that orbits the sun. That is just a drawing of the Earth.

(Who was it who did that painting of an apple (I think) with the caption "This is not an apple"?)

Actually it was a pipe (or it was not a pipe) and the painter was René Magritte.

A fairly simple answer here (with certain caveats) - if A floats on B, then B will not float on A.  Thus, if water floats on the Earth (as is the case with the seas and the oceans) then the Earth cannot float on water.  If you were to create a situation where the Earth were to float on water, then water would cease to float on the Earth, so you would have no seas or oceans.

THANKS GEORGE...so you're saying the fact that the oceans are not 'lifting off' en masse then the answer was always there !

George - I'm sorry to say this, but I find your answer rather strange. The seabeds are more-or-less impermeable so the oceans are not floating, they simply cannot leak out of the bottom. As such, what you put is analogous to saying that water floats on the bottom of a bucket so a bucket cannot float on water.

I notice you said "with certain caveats", so maybe I'm reading your reply slightly wrong.

I certainly agree, though, that if A floats on B, B cannot float on A.

The earth has an average density of 5.5 grams per cc while water has a density of 1 gram per cc so in theory the earth would sink.
