Sigmoid volvulus

A 1902 autopsy specimen from a 69 year old man admitted under Dr. Taylor for abdominal distension and acute obstruction. He was extremely ill and very little history could be elicited, beyond the fact that he had recently been taken suddenly ill. Colostomy was performed but he died soon after the operation. At autopsy the distended loop of gut was found to reach as high as the ensiform cartilage and the obstruction was due to the fact that the sigmoid colon had undergone axial rotation through one complete turn, in an anticlockwise direction. There was no peritonitis.
