Can you control what YOU dream about?

I can if I concentrate really hard . I can also manipulate a dream at times to change an outcome. It is harder sometimes and easier other times, I am not sure why. Perhaps I am in deeper sleep when it is harder to control, I am not sure!Does anyone know why this occurs?

I was a little confused as I thought I clicked on the turkey thread, so quickly looking at this thread really confused me and thought that Karen had just slipped about telling us what her super powers are. Although that would be cool, to be able to cook food in your dreams and when you wake there it is [
]
But in response to this thread, I may have controlled a couple of my dreams, but I tend to forget nearly all of mine. There are a few I can remember just about, a couple are nightmares or just quite disturbing dreams. But I would love to be able to do lucid dreaming, I would be a King, or revisit certain happy moments in my life and change them......in a dream of course, my time machine broke [

I find if I really concentrate on what I want to dream about before I sleep that I can ususally find it in there once my dream begins.. changing outcome seems harder as I have to really be thinking about it alot.. If I am too tired then I cannot change things at all. I think then I am just too deep in sleep!
Ok well if you get to be the King I get to be the princess or the Queen.. Doesn't she always get what she wants!! LOL! I want to get what my heart desires! Sounds like a plan Daniel....MAKE IT SO!

When I posted that yesterday, thinking of a happy moment I would want to go back to made me think of my ex Rachel. I think that was my only happy time for that year. I thought about her again this morning, half asleep with the alarm on my phone going in a half dream half awake mix up I thought she was on the phone.
I have a few other points in my life I would love to see again, experience them again, the only problem is it's hard to remember everything about them. If I could I'd be in training for some lucid dreaming [
]
And Karen, yes the queen indeed does get what she want.......otherwise it's off with his head [

You Should write it down. Last night was my first dream I have remembered in a while.. and I think it was spurred by one Of Neil's posts, a comment about being adopted! I was adopting a girl and a boy, very young children not babies. Then suddenly I was at a huge reception type outdoor event, There were tables full of foods and people trying to fill their plates and I was walking around holding this handful of gooey potato or macaroni salad in my palm looking for a plate. Then when I find the stack of plates on other table its covered in dust and webs and some lovely bugs as if it had been sitting there for centuries, and then suddenly I was alone.. I took the plate with my other hand and walked around looking to find a means of cleaning the plate. Alas no luck so I ate the salad stuff out of the palm of my hand, as I turned to face the north, across the way I saw a women wearing an apron wave at me and motion me to come towards her! I began to move towards her and finished eating what was on my hand and tried to clean it up! As I got closer I seen it was my Grandma!(long since departed) She wanted me to come to her she was smiling and cooking out in the middle of no where.. It was as if she wanted me to take her hand and help her cook!
I think the food in the palm of my hand was portion control in my efforts to loose weight as I don't eat more then the size of my two fists on a plate. Perhaps cutting back to one fist and Salad will insure better health!
The children and adoption would be the only way for me to ever have more children since my medical Procedure last done took me out of the running for birthing more children myself! I do Luffs children so much! They are a huge piece of my life.. I would have no problem loving them as much as my own children as I love all children and people! Now seeing my Grandma, thats just strange as I have not dreamed of her forever. The last dreams of her were frightening, she was wonderful, but she had died and I had some difficulty dealing with death at that time in my life.. So seeing her last night was a shock! Oh my Goodness as I write this right now, I realize I told a very dear friend what had happened when I was very small and she had died! I had some major issues with death then. Now I am understanding my dream... She was standing there in her apron.. She was a cook.. had been her whole life! ( excellent cook I might add) She loved cooking and she loved me and my siblings so much.. Always wanted us to come stay with her on the weekends.. She made me feel human when I felt like a Guinea pig..I was a case study for twenty years for my heart conditions. I always was embarrassed to have to disrobe in front of a huge room full of students at a hospital once a year as they were studying the procedures that were used to keep me alive and fix my heart problems.. I remember being really embarrassed as I grew bigger breasted as I did not know these people.. Somehow my Gran would talk to me about how lucky and special I was to be given such a gift of life three times..She said there was a reason.. and someday I would be able to fulfill a purpose here on earth! She said that I just needed to follow my heart and do what was in my heart to do.. She said if I stayed away from that that There would be sorrow. But that she new I would follow my heart in the end and that all would be well! I loved her so much! I miss her terribly as she made me so glad to be alive.. I know a lot of children have benefited by those students learning about my procedures and That I was truly blessed and am now to be living and breathing and making friends.. These are all blessings.. looking at a tree a bug, a baby and even your picture here as well as All of my other friends.. is truly a miracle for me..Something I cherish... There must have been a purpose for this silly thread, maybe it has helped me resolve some things, and see my Gran the way I have missed seeing her for 30 years...! I am grateful today to be alive and to be able to talk to everyone here! Daniel You and all my other friends Are wonderful and I love each and every one of you guys! Wow suddenly I am a bag of emotions, not bad ones though! YAYYYYYYYYY!

I "woke up" during a dream several months ago. One of the most unique experiences I have ever had.
I don't recall the early parts of this particular dream, only the moment I realized "this is a dream, and I can do anything I want". I was standing in the middle of a highway, maybe 8 lanes wide, with cars zipping by. I was slightly above the cars, and could see a far city as well. Immediately I not only knew this
is a dream, a product of my mind and imagination, I also knew what we call Life is not at all different, only longer and more detailed. The moment I knew this, I woke from the dream.
Since you can control what you dream about, maybe its time to control the actual dream. Try to find a predetermined object in you dreams. Like a lamp, or chair, or your hands, or feet, etc..... I haven't yet been able to do this. In good time though. Nothing is easy. The dreamworld is a whole other world to play in. Might as well experience it to the fullest.

I heard Szaldi could do maths in his sleep.
I used to be determined and disciplined, I disliked the foul environs of school. And dreamed in my sleep of being far away, digging stuff up, in a space suit on Mars, red opals.
I as a boy dreamt of peeing and woke up peeing.
To some extent I cannot control my daydreams. Painful dreams.

I do regularly dream of findin a loo and needing to go but until I find a private one i cannot go.. so in the dream if I finally find the perfect loo, I had better really get up and go as If I don't I will wake going at the same time as I am in the dream.. so weird!
Here is another dream.. I am dreaming away and all of a sudden I look at a person or one of my own body parts and I am bleeding, perhaps a finger someones arm or head or whatever.. Now I can dream I have a cut and see no actual blood and not worry, but if any one of my dreams occur and I actually dream of seeing the blood and see it in color red.. I have to force myself up as it never fails when I dream of red blood, I have started my monthly and am flowing.. so weird..
I have had no trouble solving a problem in my dreams is I concentrate on it before sleep.
Say I have a dilema with remembering someone from my pasts name or how to do something.. I will put a notebook beside my bed and before sleeping I will think about the problem till that is all I can think about, then I will try to sleep. if I manage to get to sleep and dream.. almost always recall the name or fix the problem in my dream.. Then I wake myself up and write it down! It can be a great tool when I finally can get to sleep!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucid_dreaming
The above link takes you to a wiki article about Lucid dreaming.
I think it may also be called Directed Dreaming and it goes some way to explain the nature of controlling dreams, or changing the dream -state so that you are semi-conscious or part aware of the dream you are in. You literally are aware that it is a dream you are having and so with that little bit of extra information , it gives you the ability to control the dream, but not entirely, just aspects of it.
The article also demonstrates how to prepare yourself cognitively so that the chances of lucid dreaming are increased dramatically. Just a few daily rituals, repeated daily...can help dramatically to induce a lucid dream when you sleep at night.
I believe I have had at least two lucid dreams before and they were quite an experience....sadly..the details are lost in memory but the events themselves were enough for me to understand the nature of those dreams. I knew I was dreaming...I was aware and could change myself within it.
Wonderful thread Karen mam...THANK YOU SO MUCH

Your welcome! Thanks and I wish I had better control over mine.. I think I will visit your wikipedia link and try to do something about that! I thought my thread was going to be a real loser, we will see! I like to keep a pencil and paper close to where I sleep so I can write down things as soon as they happen or as soon as I rise. Dreams can be helpful in your well being! Hugs and thanks for posting!

When I studied my hardest, I would study just before sleeping, sleep, wake up and do say five examples, then go to school and do the exam. I would remember after a sleep, otherwise a long sleep or a week or them wipes out my memory and I used memorising to do equations. Biology was easier.
But I could not control my dreams in aid of math.

Thats funny, I know how time erodes some dreams, but I find when You are lucid dreaming, they tend to stay with you for a much longer time! Keep a notebook handy for when you rise, you ca put in it any detail you remember, rewad it many times before you go to bed the next time concentrate on it!You can sometimes make this dream reoccur and then when you are able to do that, you can begin to change the outcome.. This has been helpful to me as an adult to help me change a really bad nightmare I had had from childhood that had carried on to adulthood.. and even though I knew it was a dream, it still scared the heebeegeevies out of me until I was able to redirect aspects of the dream to incorporate my adult mindset on the subject (death)!

I think Im a pretty experienced lucid dreamer. I first learned when I was little, maybe 6 or 7. The first one, I ever had, started out with some kind of monster chasing me. And then with my advanced six year old mind I would think to myself, wait a second, theres no such thing as monsters. Id turn around, once you confront a monster in a dream... well it cant eat it you, so its forced to do something else. In my particular case, it broke into some kind of dance. That provided validity that it was actually a dream. So once I figured out I was in a dream, the logical thing to do was try to control it. I wished away the monster, and created a giant water slide, and a whole bunch of chocolate. It appeared, I had a good time.
Nowadays about 25 percent of my dreams are lucid, the key is to get yourself to question wether your in one or not. For me something unusual must happen, like a monster for example, and sometimes I just figure it out for no apparent reason at all. If you have ever got yourself to question wether it is a dream, the battle is ninety percent over. Remember once you get to the questioning phase, the answer is always, you are in a dream. There is something clearly different about being in reality and dreaming. You would never question if you were dreaming or not, if you were awake. If you can remember that then youll be involved in many more of these dreams. And if you do find yourself in one, hopefully you have a good imagination, I sure do.
On second thought, not really, I probably do what any male would ........................................................................
lucid dreams are sweet.
