The idea of bleeding a patient for such a huge range of symptoms seems barbaric, until you read about haemochromatosis. It has a huge range of symptoms and the correct treatment is blood letting. It is possibly the most common recessive disease in Northwestern Europe - maybe as a *result* of doctors bleeding everybody for a few centuries. People who were abnormally good at absorbing iron would have been most able to survive their medical treatment.
