Why am I fragrant after my shower/bath ?
« on: 15/12/2005 11:56:10 »
It's not my birthday but today I thought I'd have my annual bath. Personally I still think I didn't need it but animals were feinting & birds were taking flight (even dead ones !) and little children were running away from me when I got close !..I mean, haven't they ever seen Cress growing out of armpits before ?...sheesh !!

Anyway, ( i digressed there a little didn't I ?...just like I am now)

What I want to know is, why is it when you have a bath/shower/wash your hair that when you have finished and you've had a good rinse with clean water that the aroma of the soap that you've used still lingers ?...Surely your pores have been flushed yes ?...you've had a good old scrub and wash eh ?

Help make this site as serious as it should be by offering me your detergental advice !

The perfume molecules are still on your skin, as rinsing doesn't get rid of them. If it did, I doubt the manufacturers would bother putting them in!

For the same reason normal washing up liquid shouldn't be used on lab glassware (depending on what work is done in the lab).

Fragrences are volatile oils that smell nice.  Most fragrences are mixed with what are called "fixatives" these are greasy substances in which the fragrence molecules dissolve and slowly evaporate to release the fragrence.  The greasy fixative molecules also stick to the skin and hold the fragence there.  This is more like the way a smally candle works rather than many air fresheners which use cheaper water based gells to hold the fragrence or odour nutraliser.

Thanks Little Scientist and thanks again Ian. You are a veritable font of knowledge. Presumably the same applies to my hair too yes ?

You've almost got me looking forward to my next bath and shampoo in a year from now.
;)
Thanks
