HI FROM AUSSIE LAND!
« on: 12/06/2006 08:44:17 »
I would love to say this site is great, Congratulations on putting this together.

I first came across this site searching for an answer to a debatable question, which I found.  I am no science genius in fact I would probably make all who think, much smarter than I.

It is very addictive finding a topic and just reading the following comments, so open minded I love that!  Freedom of thought is a wonderful gift, its great to see you use it

Hello from Australia and a special hello to any other Australians out there.  Of course hello to all other citizens of the world especially those who know where we are, hidden, down the bottom away from it all!  even more proud of you if you know New Zealand!

I have travelled overseas and it was sad to say I did not bump into many New Yorkians who actually knew we weren't a part of Europe.  Anyway watch out because I beleive our countrymen are invading many countries around the world as we love to travel and most of our hard working money goes into the 'overseas' travel industry.

I, wont be far away as the call of travelling is again growing stronger.

I'm brand shiny new here too... and also from the Land Down Under, so thought I'd add my greetings to this thread as well.

I discovered Nature and NakedScientist PodCasts only last week... and have been blown away! Literally! Since the first NakedScientist I listened too was all about the chemistry of fireworks ;) it took me back to my not-always-successful first year chem pracs [}:)]

It's great to find a forum where a science nerd like myself can feel at home :D

great forum guys, and I ADORE TNS - hanging out for the next installment!

Cheers,
KK [:o)]

Not only do I know where both are, I have visited them - NZ once (north island only unfortunately) & Aus twice (Sydney 1st time, Brissie the 2nd). I even had the misfortune to marry a Kiwi.

Agreed - there are plenty of young'ns leaving the Sunny Country and heading for the freezing north for a "year off" and most end up in bars and cafe's, but one of the major issies with the Australian Scientific research industry is the massive efflux of graduates to the States and the UK - and mostly due to the fact that Science in Oz just doesn't seem to pay as well as it does up north.  Of course that is a generalisation, but there are far greater financial incentives for researchers to leave Oz and make a fresh start, than to remain here.

I forgot to add, that it isn't only financial incentives either - there are far fewer research positions available in Oz than there are overseas.  In my field for example, I know of at least 96 positions that are being advertised around the states for someone in my specialty, but there is only 1 job here in Oz (and it is lumped with a whole lot of administrative crap too, so not one I'm interested in)  I got lucky.  Someone left the field here in Adelaide just last year, remembered I was interested, and offered me his job.  Usually this would not be the case - it is only because I have specialised in a relaitvely obscure, and certainly very small field, that there was no competition for the job, for the average RA there would be a much more competitive field.

Oh come on, KittyKat, the reason is obvious... there's only so much scientific research one can do while surfing!

Hi Jam,

I have some relatives over in Perth, Australia. Good to hear from an Aussie. Do you listen to the podcast?

You may find it strange that New Yorkians think Australia is a part of Europe.  But I noticed that Europeans with other native languages sometimes mix up Australia and Austria when speaking English !

New Yorkians as in people from New York. I think they are called New Yorkers. That is dumb as hell if they think Australia is in Europe. Hell America is closer to Europe.
