Can anyone help me out?

Me and some freinds are doing an experiment/competition and are trying to see who can selectivly breed the most change into a population. It kinda works like this: we choose an animal or bug of some sort, breed only the ones with a specific quality and repeat. We plan to see how far we have changed it at the end of 4 years(long term competition but its sure gonna be fun) Im considering using guppies (i heard they reproduce quickly) and only breeding the largest ones. Perhaps i will create the ultimate guppy whale!!! But anyone have a beter idea for one or any hints to help me out?

Sounds fun - as a general rule of thumb the smaller the organism the faster its lifecycle and the easier it will be to breed selectively. Guppies sound like fun, but you'll need to start with a fairly diverse genetic population in order to breed for certain traits - most of these fish will be highly genetically similar (because they have been mass bred for sale). You might therefore want to obtain fish from a variety of sales outlets to mix and match as much as possible.
This will broaden the gene pool of the fish and make interesting varieties easier to disclose...

Oooo good point there i needa be sure to get a diverse group of em
ok i think i will do it with guppies
then at the end of the 4 years ill release the giant guppies into the ocean MWUAHAHA i can see it now

On the other hand, a highly incestuous population will stand a greater chance of disclosing bizarre mutants..depends upon what you want to achieve with your 'experiment' !

yeah, ive decided i might not breed for size as to many variable could affect that. But i might breed for fin size or body length or something slightly more apparent early on (so that i can seperate them out from an early age, itll make it alot easier). And i think that id want to start off with as diverse a population as posible to strengthen the gene pool. Because ill be breeding them together for lots of generations if they dont start strong they might not have enough diversity to choose the traits i want, since it will quickly become highly incestous though those bizzare mutations should occur anyways.
I might breed for this: Color, fin length and body length
Ill only breek those that are the lightest skinned and those that have the longest body and fins. Since they have LOTS of babies per spawn it shouldnt be difficult to selectivly breed only the ones that have that combination.
I shall create a new breed of guppies MWUAHAHA
anyone make estimates on how much change ill get into em?

I should irradiate them (with X-rays or similar), or add a spoonful of radium to the tank. That should speed up their evolution a bit...

Yeah it would, or it might just kill them all or make them all steril
Perhaps i could breed radiation resistant guppies!
that would be pretty easy wouldnt it
where can i get some radium?

David Hahn, the guy who built a plutonium fast breeder reactor in his garden shed using smoke-detector sources, gas lamp mantles, aluminium foil and radium obtained a bottle of radium paint from the inside of an old clock - historically it was used to paint on the hands, together with a phosphor, to make them glow in the dark.
The radioactive decay of the radium excites the phosphor making it emit light. Watches and clocks used it all the time in the past. Now they use safer sources (rolex use tritium) but there are old clocks knocking around that you could scrape the paint from and add to your fish tank !

Consider using 'Wisconsin Fast Plants' (google it). They have a seed to seed generation time of 6 weeks. An awesome genetic experimental system.
