Why whales and dolphins may be beaching

I have a hunch that whales and dolphins beach themselves due to great distress that submarines and ships may be causing them through the use of sonar. It seems very strange that these creatures would have the urge to remove themselves from the water to their own demise. We know that whales and dolphins have a biological communication system that resembles to an extent that of sonar. Do you have any clues or ideas on this topic?
