There's a couple of definitions of for when "space" begins. One, which corresponds with the 300 mile distance already mentioned, is the beginning of the Exosphere, Which the distance at which moleculesare still gravitationally bound to the Earth but quit behaving as a gas. This is not actually a set distance, as solar activity it can vary it between 300-600 miles.
Another definition is the Kármán line, which marks off where aeronautics ends and astronautics begins (where lift from the atmosphere no longer is a significant factor.) This is put at 100 km or ~62 miles.
