Yes,There are many ways to calculate the passage of time.In a sense, it might be good to put the "New Year" at the winter solstice (Northern hemisphere) on Dec 21 or 22. To keep it exactly on the solstice might require more complex leap year rules.

Too bad the day, month and year are not nice integer multiples of one another.
