Radio Show & Podcast Feedback / AM Radio and Police speed cameras

Just as I was done listening to the South African 702 Show, I drove past a temporary speed camera, the type where the cop has to man it.
The odd thing was, that while listening to 702, which is an AM radio station, I totally lost the signal for 2-3 seconds which seemed to be right where his camera was aiming.
So the question(s) is: what technology does that type of camera use to detect my speed (I've heard RADAR), and would it be possible for that to mess up an AM radio signal?
