I think we can assume the laws of physics apply even in the absence of a detector.

We can also assume that the pattern shown on the detector is affected by the shape of the detector.

That's why I opened my data to be discussed here. If my ideas survive scrutiny, then it's for their merits, not necessarily because of me personally. If they are truly universal, then sooner or later someone else will come up with the same conclusions.

Scientific breakthroughs by definition defy at least some aspects of established science.

The Problem With Sabine Hossenfelder

Sabine Hossenfelder is a very popular science communicator who focuses largely on topics in physics. Although much of her content is effective and without issue, there is an undercurrent of anti-establishment rhetoric that has grown immensely as of late, and it is an enormous problem. Sabine is a not a charlatan like most of my other targets, and this is not a hit piece, but rather commentary on this aspect of her work and how it came to be. If you are a fan of hers, consider this perspective.

The difference from pseudo science is about which aspects of established science were wrong.

What the detector shows is irrelevant. The elephant stays in the room and so do its fleas, whether I wear my spectacles (so I can see them) or not.

The detector doesn't change the wave function of the interfering light. But without a detector you don't know whether or not a photon has passed.

Do you have an example that can't be analysed by Huygens and he usual superposition equations?  Excluding, of course, your hybrid diffraction-reflection-refraction pattern from a thick transparent "edge", or diffraction of a polychromatic beam.

How do you analyze the previous same side diffraction-interference pattern? Can you do it using wavelets based on Huygens' principle?

The plots below show that b determines the intersection between V function and the critical line, regardless the value of c. The last plot shows that the statement is still true even when a non-trivial zero is involved.

V(s) = log( { ζ(0.5+d eb+c i)-ζ(0.5-d eb+c i) } /  { ζ(0.5+d+c i)-ζ(0.5-d+c i) } )
For the sake of the argument, let's assume that there exist anomalous Zeta zeros, where s is not on the critical line and not on the real line either. Here are the implications:
ζ(0.5+d+c i ) = 0
ζ(0.5-d+c i ) = 0
ζ(0.5+d+c i)-ζ(0.5-d+c i) = 0
when d ≠ 0

This will make the V function to blow up because its denominator becomes 0, except when the numerator is also 0.
ζ(0.5+d e^b+c i)-ζ(0.5-d e^b+c i) = 0
ζ(0.5+d e^b+c i) = ζ(0.5-d e^b+c i)  for all finite b

Individually, on their own, each of Y, S, and V functions are not convincing enough against anomalous zeros of Zeta function. But when they are combined, the conclusion is overwhelmingly strong in supporting Riemann's Hypothesis.

Y function can reliably detect anomalous zero by getting additional "legs" of negative infinity. It's certainly an anomalous curve of Y function, but we can't say that it's impossible only from this observation.

S function reliably gets closer to a straight line with negative slope as the imaginary part of the input is increased. We should be able to prove this fact by processing the nested infinite sums as the definition of S function. But it's not sensitive to zeros of Zeta function, including the ordinary non-trivial zeros lying on the critical line.

V function itself lacks the advantage of Y function while also has the weakness of S function. But when its implications from anomalous zero are combined with that from Y and S function, the argument against the existence of anomalous zero can't be denied.

So the "limit" only applies to silicon. Fair enough.

That's what they say. Increasing the limits requires additional layers of different materials to capture more frequencies, which adds costs with diminishing additional benefits.

Here's a video precluding the last one, addressing an issue from a research paper.

Paper shows Scale alone won't lead to AGI: Scaling Laws don't apply to OOD Tasks

OOD = out-of-distribution. In this context, we refer to OOD data as data that is sufficiently different from the models' training data.

I regularly upload valuable insights from recent papers like this one. Subscribe to stay up-to-date with the latest understanding of AI models.

This fascinating paper (https://arxiv.org/abs/2406.06489) shows that machine learning models (like transformer-based large language models) don't generalize to OOD tasks. Performance for these OOD tasks does not improve with scale, meaning scaling laws might not work for this subset of tasks. Therefore, scale alone might not be enough to reach AGI, as OOD tasks are a core part of general intelligence.

In this video, I argue why this is more nuanced than it seems, provide thoughts and insights on how this paper relates to previous research about grokking and finally offer a possible solution to this problem.

If you're so highly-paid researcher at a well-funded AI startup you can afford to retire in 3-5 years. Fact is, most people these days can't even save enough money by the time they are 65 to retire nevermind in just a few years from now. We are going to need some sort of bridge to a post-labour society where we don't end up with tens of millions of starving people who are economically worthless because of AGI/ASI.

No. The managers and inverstors of service providers may benefit from expansion of the market, but those who actually provide the service generally don't. An efficient business occupies each production worker to his/her capacity.

In the near future, we can expect that those who actually provide the service are robots and AI agents.

Why Scaling leads to Intelligence: Evolution and Dissipative Systems

Why do neural networks get smarter just by making them bigger? The answer lies in physics, specifically in what we call "dissipative systems" - the same principle that drives evolution and complexity in nature. I use these insights to make predictions of the direction AI will go, and how these intuitions lead us to conclude that the scaling law ensures a path towards artificial general intelligence (AGI).

This way of thinking is similar to complexity theory. I will soon make a video explaining how this applies to neural networks specifically as it's a fascinating subject.

Taking Trolley Problem Memes Seriously (Again)

Here's a variation of trolley problem I just thought. Imagine that the switch will send the trolley to another parallel universe, frozen in time for a year, and then return to the same location to continue its journey. When the trolley comes back from that multidimensional spacetime travel, the five tied persons have already died from starvation. The trolley will only hit dead skeletons.
Should we pull out the switch?

You haven't defined an "effective" country.

Suppose it means a group of people living in geographical proximity and able to sustain and defend themselves entirely with the natural resources available to them. Then those countries whose populations are wholly or largely dependent on loans and donations from outside, or who are depleting their resources unsustainably, would not be considered "effective".

In contrast, a soldier who lived alone in the jungle for 40 years despite considering himself to be at war with everyone else, would thus be an effective country with a population of one.

An effective country improves the survival rate of its citizens, compared to the absence of that country. In your case of one population country, it's indifferent. Thus not effective.

In summary: yes, we do sense temperature, but even before we get to  neurophysiology, the physics is  more complicated and dynamic than an ideal thermometer.

The invention of temperature as a concept was a necessity since it's essential to our survival. Earliest objective measurement of temperature was conveniently done by using conduction as heat transfer method, which requires mechanical contact between the measured object and the measuring device.
Non-contact temperature measurement using radiation was invented much later.
