Yeah, you know, those ancient Romans did lead interesting lives.

But people sometimes wonder why Latin seems to say so much, in so few words. But actually there is a simple explanation for that. Latin has no a, an or the. And they rarely use prepositions or pronouns. Their words, though, just tend to be longer than English words. And they pronounce every vowel, you know.

Also Latin speakers rarely ever used the verb to be. If two nouns were next to each other, the meaning was understood by most literate speakers of Latin. Yet when African Americans don't use the verb to be, it's considered nonstandard. That's interesting.

BTW you know Latin isn't even the most complex language there is. Now that's scary.

One of the problems with formal Latin still applies in German, putting the verb at the end of the sentence. No big deal if you are reading it, but I had an impassioned appeal from a simultaneous interpreter at a European Union committee meeting. The chairman was summing up a couple of days' work when the voice in the headphones said "Please ask him to speak quicker. He is using very formal German and we can't translate it into any other language until he gets to the end of the sentence!"

But if you like long words, you'll love it. I was delighted to discover in my younger days that a TV HT rectifier was a fernsehenhochspannunggleichrichtenapparat.

Quite a few UK schools teach Spanish as a second language with wider usage and, for anglophones, easier grammar and pronunciation than French. My preference as a listener would have been German for its strict logic and pronunciation but any language with gendered common nouns (die? der? das?) makes life pointlessly difficult for a novice speaker.
