Can we switch battery cathode to anode to continue current flow?

In a battery the cathode absorbs electrons and current flows away from the cathode towards the anode and does work. Could we arbitrarily switch the function of the cathode and anode? If we could switch the function would the reaction continue, but with current flow in the opposite direction. Like tilting a table and water flows down the slope, switch the slope and the water flows in the opposite direction. Could the cathode switch be enabled by a capacitor system, where the charge from the capacitor causes greater potential in the cathode?
