General Science / Just how does a metal detector work?

Well this year I purchased 3 metal detectors! Two for children and one pretty basic adult size metal detector. Today while my grandson was here we went out to use his child version metal detector which by the way works about as well as the very expensive adult one I bought for his brother at Christmas. While digging for his treasure he began asking me about how the meal detector worked and I not having ever thought about it immediately began mulling it over in my head, thinking surely there must be something to do with magnetism that helped it find metal, but because I really had no idea about the basic principles of their workings, I refrained from giving him my immediate thoughts and told him I'd have to refer to others who knew more about it then I do, So what lovely things can you tell me about the inner workings of the metal detectors? if you can enlighten us on how they work, including any details my 7 year old Grandson might like to know? Like how they detect different types of metals etc,,, ? He is autistic and very bright and inquisitive!
Whilst giving me many of his own analogies, He was extremely excited to find his two little treasures .. LOL And old metal bottle cap off perhaps an old alka-seltzer bottle along with a large Bolt! He exclaimed That surely any pirates would be very frustrated by the people who have made metal detectors and by us for finding their treasures so easily!

My daughter has moved home to my property to save to build or buy a manufactured home and live here. In her presence this last year, she started a bit of a farm.. 9 goats, 8 chickens, 1 white silkie Rooster and 7 hens. 2 Dogs! She has quite the menagerie started. The most odd thing I have seen, is the male goats urinating in their own mouths!! Goats can be quite noisy little critters but this is just gross! And they can really smell particularly bad because of it! So why do they do this? I have not seen any of the females do it, but a couple of the unneutered males. Is this a male goat thing or just any Goat? Why do they do this and how can they physically do it,,,they look like contortionists whilst doing it. LOL.. Please enlighten my non-farmer mind...!

Happy birthday to me! Look at what the world presented me for my birthday evening this year! It's absolutely fabulous and so Beautiful! Now it is a sad thing that the fires are destroying so much acreage and homes, and in the same stroke we are able to see such displays of Beauty?  What causes the smoke to make these changes in our lovely Blue moon?

Do they still use germ warfare to fight wars these days?

I am asking because these outbreaks started after NK started saying they were sending the united states a Christmas present?

      So Naturally, I am curious as to weather such viruses are used like they used to be?

      Nk has been known to use them in the past? My mind is racing, having a lot of time to think while in isolation?

I am sure, I am not the only person who has seen the time coincidences, between the verbal sparring back and forth, between the countries, and threats on both sides. And then the outbreaks starting.

Physiology & Medicine / How are transcatheter aortic valve replacement - TAVR - procedures carried out?

It seems I have came to the end of being able to control my heart valve issues with medicine and I cannot have another open heart surgery due to all my previous ones and co-morbidities. I also have a bicuspid issue that is a culprit here.

My Aorta has two stable aneurysms,  but the aorta valve itself has stenosis and is failing, it's regurgitating badly, causing me loads of grief, with breathing issues, and I am totally worn out trying to get from point A to point B.

My angina has escalated again with Blood pressure meds not controlling everything.   There is no coronary artery disease which is in my favor..

I take good care of myself, but needless to say my defects have progressed and now my the valves are fouled and narrowing far to fast..  My Doctor does not believe I have another 6 months. The rate of closure has sky rocketed in six months.  In a year I jumped from a 17 to 30  on the closure scale and that was november. Between November and March I shot up over 60.

I understand I need to have this procedure to be able to live.  I am going down to Stanford again 14th and 15th of May two weeks to be evaluated for this procedure.  I am, according to my Doctor, an extremely high risk for open heart surgery so my only alternative is the "TAVR" procedure, if I can pass my evaluation.

So I have watched the procedure but have a few questions. And would like more detailed info before I go down to hospital.   I understand that the biological valve either pig or cow or whatever only lasts between 3 to five years before it starts deteriorating.  Five year study I read 54 percent of people were dead at 5 year check others were in various states of deterioration and failure... But those patients on average were 74 years and older. I am 57.

Seemed the older folks valves held up longer then the younger folks...  So One Of my questions is will they monitor the progression of the valve and if it starts to fail can it be replaced again or can it only be done 1 time? Is it just this procedure can only be done 1time.  Can a regular open heart be done at the point of deterioration if co-morbidities are improved?

What is it, and is it safe.  I do not have a clue about it and have never heard of it till yesterday. Do they fast by just avoiding liquids or both liquids and solid foods.? It does not seem safe to me, as he is talking about 4 to 5 days. Does anyone know anything about it, or its safety? Especially its safety and how it works in the body.. He was trying to tell me it forces your fat cells to turn to liquid??? I  do not understand what he means by that. Perhaps one of you might know how that break down, happens, or if its bunk? Have I possibly misunderstood his explaination?

Meaning people who suffer from Diastolic heat failure, Passive COPD, and Avascular necrosis of both hips, knees, and shoulders,
As they are very painful bone wise. Anyway all of them are either caused by or exasperated by lack of oxygen. Just wondering if this treatment could offer any relief and or help to replenish oxygen to the joints and other organs through pressurized chamber as such..?

My Dearest Doctors and esteemed scientists who specialize in the very technical business of medicine and science goodness...in whom supports my favorite forum of knowledge on the Internet! Today I come to you just a bit over a week of being given a diagnosis of Invasive Ductal Carcinoma, (some of which is in situ still within the ducts or lobules) and some already have penetrated the duct walls and have invaded the surrounding tissue of the Breast!
 They are wanting me to decide on 1 of 2 methods of treatment. The first one consists of a partial mastectomy with radiation along with the takings of  a mamma lymph node and a few of its surrounding buddies to then biopsy to confirm or refute the presence of the cancer having invaded my lymphatic system...If the answer is yes to its spread or matastiziation into other organs or the lymphatic system then we would recheck the breast to insure the cell removal and rethink the plan and go to option B.A full mastectomy possibly two.. wth radiation and, again, checking lymph nodeds at this point..If cancer has gone systemic then I will be seeing both radiologist and the chemo therapist I met day before yesterday.....So I have been told that over a 5 year survival rate the total mastectomy gives me 5 % more chance to survive and five percent less to go with a partial lumpectomy!
So what I need are more pros or cons toward each proceedure...so the only advantage I see is that the total illiminates having a second surgery and gives me a 5% better chance of living 5 years or more...Are there more issues involved that I can base my decisions on...like is that 5 % advantage worth the extra protection..how often does it turn out that, that little difference could be the difference between life or death? I am not looking for Diagnosis and I haven't been staged yet due to needing a lymph node verification one way or the other? So could you guys add some things I should weigh in with this. such as will it put a strain on heart more with the full mastectomy  and my aneurysms or would it be better for me not to do surgery twice..etc. Perhaps you may know of any benefits on one or both procedures!...

So this absolutely fascinates me! While reading an other thread that was started by
a troubled student I noticed the thread had become semi-derailed in a good way to provide the needed support being given...Thank you..
  I am very interested in learning more about Artificial General intelligence.... 
   I would love to hear more from both of you, David and Bill, on your thoughts about the advancements that scientists may be expecting to happen within the next ten to 15 years... It sounds so exciting for our near future...I can imagine my children being able to enjoy a life more stable as far as economy and jobs or no jobs. Automatic in-come for everyone.sounds like this could literally wipe out poverty among us all! Its been so much a part of everyone's culture all over the world.It sounds incredible!!!  Imagine everyone being able to raise their own children
and without dying from the stress of two and three jobs trying to feed, cloth, shelter as well as
provide reliable safe medical care because you won't be having to dance to adifferent drummer to cover healthcare and to try to pay the doctor because you don't have a money tree!
    Please tell me more?

I have chronic Lyme disease. Will this new discovery help in the antibiotic treatment for my Lyme disease... Right now we are rotating 2 different antibiotics at a time For several months and then we hit it with a second round of paired antibiotics in order to try to treat the Lyme spirochetes and avoid this sensitivity..I read your news bulletin on this and my heart jumped out of my chest! It has been a long road over the last 7 or 8 years now.. longer if I start way back at the time I contracted the disease and did not know about Lyme so thought nothing of it. I will spare you all the information on all the secondary Conditions I have acquired with that over the years..
  I really want To know if this new discovery will better help me battle and gain better controll over the advancement of my disease...?  It seems at the present that for every step forward, we seem to take 3 steps backwards.. it's hard to hear them tell me it gets worse before it gets better... thus far as in my case we've had very little luck with the treatment working. Because about the time we start to pull
 ahead the current antibiotic pair becomes resistent and the herxing gets so bad we
have to stop allow my body to rest. For a little while last time just over 2 months
before we were able to start the antibiotics up again...
      Will this be Benificial in my treatment or have I misunderstood the outcomes of
the whole theory and outcome of this discovery?

Technology / If we arent supposed to eat midnight snacks, why do refrigerators have lights?

This is a question my niece asked in her facebook comments. My first thought being no other reasoning because the lights go off when you close the door, right? I can't say for sure because I have never stepped in and closed the door behind me....lol....

So, seriously is there any other reason for refridgerator lights, other then the obvious midnight snackers?

What say ye scientific minds of refridgerator goodness?

So just how valid are these 2 illnesses?  I am being told I have to move out of my home!
 After Blood tests and multiple specialty labs results.. The Dr. says that my C4a. Complement Protein markers should be below this reference range of <2831 and that mine comes out well above at 18741*..it is marked as abnormal Flag Code H. She said that the majority of patients at this stage have poor recovery but 20,000 is considered point of no return...as far as recovery. She says she cannot promise recovery but we are going to try.
So giving that I may or may not get better, this
I also Have Chronic lyme of 17 plus years untreated til a year ago...diagnosis has blown many of their past diagnoses up! She said they will have to treat each disease or secondary issue individually.

   I want to better understand how these illnesses work against me and why?
     
     So what can you guys tell me about these things that I don't know?

so more albums in mint condition. 

Has anyone had any experience in this department..?

I have asked friends for help in the past but no
one seemed to know what to do..or wanted too
Then I tried to give them away and have since found
out they are worth a lot of money..LOl I am in the
market to buy a reliable little car instead of my
mini van. I need something fuel efficient and I
think this will help me dig up a resource for the
financial end.

I have been giving away all my record albums, but
these I think I will try to sell.

I do not want any links posted here in the forum but

Physiology & Medicine / My Lyme disease tests came back Positive.. so now what should I expect?

I had the first tests done and they were inconclusive so she set up some special Igenics tests, was a special blood tests that had to be shipped out to a special lab.... to be checked and or interpreted.

I was called into My doctors office a couple days ago and she told me my tests came back positive.. she also said there was a portion of the test she could not understand how to read and that she had to call the lab and get an explanation so she could give me a full detailed results...?
All I know is what wiki says about Lyme disease.. and thats not much. I know I had the tick bite with the bullseye between 10 and fifteen years ago. a year and a half ago I was put on docycycline for 7 and 1/2 months for a couple bad bacterias they were trying to combat.. She told me that even though that treatment was for something else that it was probably effective in stopping the Lyme progression?
So with Lyme does that mean it won't get worse but it will stay the same3? I read there is no cure for Lyme unless caught early and this has not been caught early. So what is usually the procedure  in treatment for later stage Lyme, and how does treatment generally work as far as any type of recovery or relief of symptoms...?
