Not quite as dramatic, but we can all see the space shuttle and space station pass overhead by looking out at night at the right times.
At the right time of the eveneing, they appear like slowly-moving bright stars that take 30 seconds or a minute to cross the night sky.
Website http://www.heavens-above.com/ will calculate where and when to look at the sky for almost any location on the planet. You don't have to register. I suggest in the first instance from the "Anonymous users" menu you select the "Select your location from our huge database." option.
You will find, for example, that the ISS will be visible for a minute or two at around 18:37 tomorrow evening.
My daughter was there watching it with her school. She just called me a little while ago and was so excited. She said it was absolutely incredible to see.
