Did anyone ever check whether the introduction of brake lights resulted in people following closer behind the car in front?As they have been mandatory for about 100 years it would be difficult to disentangle this hypothesis from the statistics of increased traffic density, increased speeds, mandatory speed limits, improved tyre treads, and brakes that actually work.
