Hypnagogic or hypnopompic hallucinations are visual, tactile, auditory, or other sensory events, usually brief but occasionally prolonged, that occur at the transition from wakefulness to sleep (hypnagogic) or from sleep to wakefulness (hypnopompic) ... A telephone interview of nearly 5,000 people aged 15 to 100 in the UK showed that 37% of the sample reported experiencing hypnagogic hallucinations and 12.5% reported hypnopompic hallucinations.

... I was in bed and awoke to see my grandmother standing at the foot of my bed. This gave me a great surprise but not a great shocking one because she was very much alive at the time and lived in the same house. However there was something odd in that she was looking beyond me not at me.
Symptoms of sleepwalking include: Having blank look on face Not remembering the sleep walking episode when they wake up
