Old British joke. Bloke writes to to the Minister of Trade "I would like to own a small business. What should I do." Minister writes back "Buy a big one and wait."
Conversely, you could start from where you are, issue shares, borrow money, and work hard. It's good fun and one day I may be able to show a profit!

What is use of an office in business?
In the days before the internet
, a lot of business activity was controlled by pieces of paper:
- People were given jobs written on pieces of paper
- People added information to existing pieces of paper, or transferred information from one piece of paper to other pieces of paper
- People sent pieces of paper to other people to give them work to do
- All the paper was shuffled around by an internal mail department
- Sometimes, people held people formal meetings so everyone could hear the same thing at the same time, and also interact a bit with each other
- More often, people held informal meetings at the water-cooler, coffee machine, photocopier, printer or lunch.
Today
, most of the pieces of paper have been replaced by email, web pages and instant messaging.
- You can access the web pages and email from home just as easily as in the office
- Using web-based conferencing software, you can "attend" formal meetings, even if you are 1,000km away from the office
- So you would have to say that the office has lost a lot of it's previous value
- But it's still good for people to interact in person, in both formal and informal meetings
- I find it's much easier to interact with someone over videoconference if you have previously met them in person
- When I'm in the office, I overhear things and join in conversations that are important - but nobody would have gone out of their way to let me know that this conversation was happening.
- So an office is full of disruptions, but also full of random communication opportunities
- Now that we are moving away from printers and photocopiers, probably the most important piece of furniture left in the office is the coffee machine/water cooler.
In some countries, there is a legal requirement for a registered company to have a street address. But this could just be a small office with a secretary.
In some businesses, it is good to have somewhere to meet with customers.

If you want to issue shares, borrow money, obtain goods and services on credit, issue legally enforceable contracts and invoices, and stay on the right side of almost every business law, you will need a permanent registered address. This need not be your home or actual place of business but must be somewhere that legal papers can be served, so a bank, law office, or professional accommodation address ("secretarial services" office) is a minimum starting point.
Being an oldfashoned sort of guy, I like to deal with businesses where the factory/warehouse/farmyard/whatever is a lot bigger and busier than the office. I was impressed by Siemens, a huge German electrical engineering corporation, when I asked how many accountants were on the main Board. "One. He comes in on Thursdays, when we talk about money. The other 14 members are engineers". Siemens make good stuff and a healthy profit.
