Imagine for a second capitalism that doesn't honour its own debts, creates wealth, prints money, runs up a debt, etc etc etc.....people lose trust in capitalism because it only favours those who know how and when the money is printed, etc etc etc,.....is the obvious reaction a more temperate "socialism"?

I think that those characteristics can apply to any inwards-looking country that cares more about its internal image than its outside image.
- Greece is a mildly socialist country that didn't care about external debt
- China was a strongly communist country that managed its currency valuation, but restricted foreign purchases by Chinese citizens so that it had extreme buying power over other countries. (China is rather different now.)
In the end, this inwards-looking attitude is a problem in all democracies, since eligible voters come from within the country, and people who aren't citizens (or who are children of citizens) don't get a vote.
- It's a problem in many dictatorships too!
This inwards-looking attitude seems to be endemic, worldwide. I recently heard of an international survey where they asked respondents "How important is your state in national history?" and "How important is your country in world history?".
- Everyone seemed to have an inflated view of themselves as the center of the nation, and the center of the world
- Geocentrism is dead! Long live the Egocentric model of the universe!
