Saw this in another group I belong to, hope this is allowed on the forum. It's US but you can 'click' from any country, every little bit helps!
In honor of World AIDS Day on December 1st, Bristol-Myers Squibb, the pharmaceutical monolith (that charges nearly $1000 for a 30-day supply of one of its HIV/AIDS medications), is donating $1 to the National AIDS Fund for each person who simply visits their website and "virtually lights a candle".

That CAN'T be true! / US military trains 'air force' of bomb-sniffing bees
« on: 29/11/2006 11:27:31 »
WASHINGTON (AFP) - US military defense scientists have found a way to train the common honey bee to smell explosives used in bombs, a skill they say could help protect American troops abroad.
Scientists at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico said in an online statement published Monday they had developed a method to harness the bee's exceptional olfactory sense.
"The new techniques could become a leading tool in the fight against the use of improvised explosive devices, or IEDs, which present a critical vulnerability for American military troops abroad and is an emerging danger for civilians worldwide," the research laboratory said.

Hello peeps.
Being a very fair-skinned blonde I tend to burn rather than tan, so have to use sunblock. I've been given a bottle of self-tanning moisturiser. Can anyone enlighten (groan) me please as to how this works?

That CAN'T be true! / Working invisibility cloak created at last
« on: 21/10/2006 11:12:52 »
An invisibility cloak that works in the microwave region of the electromagnetic spectrum has been unveiled by researchers in the US. The device is the first practical version of a theoretical set-up first suggested in a paper published earlier in 2006.
The cloak works by steering microwave light around an object, making it appear to an observer as if it were not there at all. Materials that bend light in this way do not exist naturally, so have to be engineered with the necessary optical properties.
Earlier in 2006, John Pendry, a theoretical physicist at Imperial College London, UK, and colleagues showed how such an invisibility cloak could, in theory, be made (see Physicists draw up plans for real 'cloaking device'). Now David Smith and colleagues at Duke University in North Carolina, US, have proved the idea works.
In recent years, materials scientists have made rapid progress in making so-called "metamaterials", which can have exotic electromagnetic properties unseen in nature. These are made up of repeating structures of simple electronic components such as capacitors and inductors.
In 2001, Smith built a metamaterial with a negative refractive index, which bends microwaves in a way impossible for ordinary lenses. Now he has gone one step further.

Plant Sciences, Zoology & Evolution / Keep Darwin's 'lies' out of Polish schools
« on: 15/10/2006 19:52:57 »
I was going to post it up under That CAN'T be true but I don't think it's On the Lighter Side.
WARSAW (AFP) - Poland's deputy education minister called for the influential evolutionary theories of Charles Darwin not to be taught in the country's schools, branding them "lies."
"The theory of evolution is a lie, an error that we have legalised as a common truth," Miroslaw Orzechowski, the deputy minister in the country's right-wing coalition government, was quoted as saying by the Gazeta Wyborcza daily Saturday.
Orzechowski said the theory was "a feeble idea of an aged non-believer, "who had come up with it "perhaps because he was a vegetarian and lacked fire inside him."
The evolution theory of the 19th-century British naturalist holds that existing animals and plants are the result of natural selection which eliminated inferior species gradually over time. This conflicts with the "creationist" theory that God created all life on the planet in a finite number.
Orzechowski called for a debate on whether Darwin's theory should be taught in schools.
"We should not teach lies, just as we should not teach bad instead of good, or ugliness instead of beauty," he said. "We are not going to withdraw (Darwin's theory) from the school books, but we should start to discuss it."
The deputy minister is a member of a Catholic far-right political group, the League of Polish Families. The league's head, Roman Giertych, is education minister in the conservative coalition government of Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski.
Giertych's father Maciej, who represents the league in the European Parliament, organised a discussion there last week on Darwinism. He described the theory as "not supported by proof" and called for it be removed from school books.
The far-right joined the government in May when Kaczynski's ruling conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party, after months of ineffective minority government, formed a coalition including LPR and the populist Sambroon party.
Roman Giertych has not spoken out on Darwinism, but the far-right politician's stance on other issues has stirred protest in Poland since he joined the government.
A school pupils' association was expected to demonstrate in front of the education ministry on Saturday to call for his resignation.

Just Chat! / Check your stress levels
« on: 15/10/2006 20:07:02 »
I am not sure exactly how it works, but this is amazingly accurate. Read the full description before looking at the picture.
The picture below has 2 identical dolphins in it. It was used in a case study on stress level at St. Mary's Hospital.
Look at both dolphins jumping out of the water. The dolphins are identical.
A closely monitored, scientific study of a group revealed that in spite of the fact that the dolphins are identical; a person under stress would find differences in the two dolphins. If there are many differences found between both dolphins, it means that the person is experiencing a great amount of stress.
Look at the photograph and if you find more than one or two differences you may want to take a vacation.

That CAN'T be true! / Cockroach-eating contest
« on: 11/10/2006 17:23:50 »
A North American theme park operator is to stage a competition in which people will try to break the world cockroach-eating record.
Theme park operator Six Flags Inc, based in New York, is staging the contest as part of a promotion leading up to Halloween in which it is also offering customers free entry or line-jumping advantages if they eat a live Madagascar hissing cockroach.
"It's something that's supposed to be scary, it's icky, it's gross, it's Halloween fun and it's just one small part of the haunted houses and thrilling rides going on."

Street lights in Reykjavik and several other towns in Iceland were plunged into darkness as street lights were turned off to help star-gazers get a better view of the night sky.
Thousands of people turned out to stare at the heavens, although rain and clouds obscured the view from some places.
Organiser Andri Snaer Magnason said: "All the streets lights are off, we can see a few stars. I would have liked to have a completely clear sky, but you can't have everything. But it was nice."

The Environment / Schwarzenegger OKs chemical exposure research
« on: 30/09/2006 12:03:31 »
SACRAMENTO, California (Reuters) - California will become the first U.S. state to try to measure how its residents are absorbing chemicals from common products under a "bio-monitoring" bill signed on Friday by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.
State health officers will use blood, urine, tissue, hair and breast milk samples collected voluntarily from a cross-section of California, taking into account ethnic, age, income and geographic differences, to gauge levels of exposure.

PM calls on Poles to feed the ducks
WARSAW (Reuters) - Poland's beleaguered Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski surprised Warsaw's press corps when he called a news briefing on Saturday in a Warsaw park to call on Poles to feed ducks with the approach of winter.
Widely expected to make an announcement on the future of his crumbling coalition government, instead the usually dour prime minister presented a yellow duck as the campaign mascot of his Law and Justice (PiS) party ahead of November's local elections.

This was on another list I belong to, thought you might appreciate it here. Besides, Neil told me I had to post it!!! Yup, that's right folks, we can all blame him []
Some clever new twists to a story we have seen before:
NEW YORK - A public school teacher was arrested today at John
F.Kennedy International Airport as he attempted to board a flight
while in possession of a ruler, a protractor, a set square, a slide
rule, and a calculator.
At a morning press conference, Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez said
he believes the man is a member of the notorious Al-gebra movement.
He did not identify the man, who has been charged by the FBI with
carrying weapons of math instruction.
"Al-gebra is a problem for us," Gonzalez said. "They desire solutions
by means and extremes, and sometimes go off on tangents in a search
of absolute value. They use secret code names like 'x' and 'y' and
refer to themselves as 'unknowns,' but we have determined they belong
to a common denominator of the axis of medieval with coordinates in
every country. As the Greek philanderer Isosceles used to say, 'There
are 3 sides to every triangle.'
'When asked to comment on the arrest, President Bush said, "If God
had wanted us to have better Weapons of Math Instruction, He would
have given us more fingers and toes." White House aides told
reporters they could not recall a more intelligent or profound
statement by the President during his entire administration.
