When you were a child, anybody could walk off the street and have full access to the airport, all the way up to the boarding gates. Then 911 happened, TSA screening went into effect, and you can't get past the ticketing area without a boarding pass. In addition, due to these heightened security concerns, loitering in those few areas you can get to is frowned on( even if it wasn't, people in these areas are generally busy getting tickets, checking luggage or going through security, and are unlikely to be receptive to people trying to engage them in this way). Airports are no longer seen as good places for these people to operate.
Id say that the millenium happened, without a rapture, so theyve all given up and gone home.
