By gum, I remember the days, many moons ago, as a keen amateur with my Pattersons tank and such like gear. I even dabbled in E6 process.

The above bias-relief took 30 seconds on a computer rather than 30 minutes, or more, it would have taken in a wet darkroom.

I specialize in archival prints (for museums and collectors).
Spitting ink on a page is still not moving atoms with photons.
An ink jet print pales compared to platinum/palladium or Van Dyke print.
And longevity wise the ink jets don't come close either.

Also I hand coat my own papers allowing me to do things that can't be done with a digital dark room such as printing on tissue paper.
I'm not going to knock digital photography though. I use it all the time.
And its ascent has given me a niche market making truly archival prints since not that many people still work a wet darkroom.

Printed on stretched silk span tissue--this print is 4 feet tall.

You could have the best of both worlds. It is possible to have a film negative made from a digital image. So you could manipulate the image on a computer, have a film negative made from a digital image file, then use the negative to make an archival quality print in the wet darkroom. This new/old combo would permit infinite control over the image (on the computer) and could save on the cost of silver/palladium lost during experimental exposures which are no longer necessary because the dodging and burning takes place on the computer screen.

As for longevity a digital image could exist for as long as there are devices to display/print it, which is going to longer than the life of any print, (even a palladium one).

If you keep a palladium print dry it is as stable as the Lascaux paintings.
The digital information does not degrade but the medium it is on does. CDs, DVDs, tapes, degrade one has to copy the information from one disk to the other to preserve the information.

Most of my work is making wet prints of originally digitally captured images.
Although I still get an occasional emulsion negative, 99% have gone to digital capture.

My box has been the home to frogs now for years.. I do not bother the spiders and the frogs keep comming back and using the box... so it is good.
We have had new mail carriers who were un nerved and threw the mail in hard and killed a frog....but My current carriers are wonderful and enjoy the delivery....
