In my defense, I'm a foreigner, English is not my mother tongue so you have to forgive me if I do not use gramma perfectly . Besides, in a dictionary it defines "starving" ( adjective) as spoken word meaning very hungry.
I don't get why you gave me this vocab lesson instead of giving your idea to my question.

General Science / Why one pukes when seeing disturbing scenes??

From CSI, a man who helped a murderer to cover the victim dead body usually puked , why is this so??
Investigators are likely to believe he's not a killer because he puked when he tried covering up the body!! Is this always the case??
Can anyone explain why one pukes?
Is it just a general idea of having seen a disguting scene as a signal and then is sent to the nervous system , which is then sent to the target organ which is a stomach and the response is to puke?
There must be some sort of advantage of throwing up, right?

Case 1: Mendel's discoveries of the rules of inheritance benefited enormously from the fact that the genes he analysed were all on <u>diffrent </u>chromosomes and that there are <b><u>no</u></b> sex chromosomes in pea.
My lecturer said it was a big advantage!!! why so??
Case 2 : If neither of those conditions applied, what different results would it be??
My guess in case 2 is those genes in pea would be sex-linked and the phenotypic ratio would be 1 : 1: 1: 1 for different phenotypes, not 9 :3:3:1 like in case 1.

In order to prove the hypothesis "Human free secretory component is composed of the first 585 amino acid residues of the polymeric immunoglobulin receptor", do you need to run protein sequencing?
Anyone have an idea of how much it costs for sequencing protein,say human trypsin? My estimation is 400 pounds, is it far less?

I have read the article about drug design "New Bull's Eyes for Drug" by Terry Kenakin from Scientific American,October 2005.
It has been suggested that a type of drug called "allosteric modulator" can prevent an HIV virus from entering the cell by changing the shape of a hook on CCR5(cell-surface receptor) so a virus 's coat protein know as "gp120"cannot bind to a hook and cannot infect cell.However, a virus can mutate quickly and maybe able to create a new protein coat that could bind quite well to te allosterically altered CCR5.Therefore, scientist suggests a new type of drugs called"internalisation inducer"which promotes internalisation of CCR5 from cell surface so deny a virus its point of attack. This idea is still theoretical,not yet go on human trials.
The thing I wonder is how long should AIDS patients take medicines ?How do they know when they should stop taking this kind of drug?Would it have side-effect on the cell when there are no CCR5 on cell surface?. I forgot to mention that normally CCR5 respond to 3 chemokines that can attract leucocytes to a site of infection.
What I think is that if there are other types of virus (say human flu virus)in our body while we taking that drug,the immune system wouldn't be stimulated due to no CCR5 on cell surface,would it?So then how can we fight the flu virus?
What do you guys think?

I am assigned to compare the journals e.g. FEBS Letters, Nature and Current Opinion ,The Jurnal of Biological Chemistry and Journal of Immunological Methods.
1) What I wonder is how many types of the style of presentation in journals?Can anyone give me examples so I can categorise these journals.
2)What happens in the intervening period from the submission of paper for publication and the acceptance for publication?

In a practical of analysing RNAse activity,we preared TBE buffer, TE buffer, Tris-HCl buffer , NaCl solution and TrisHCl/NaCl buffer and we used RNAse A with different concentrations in each vial to digest the yeast RNA and run that on agarose gel electrophoressis as an assay for ribunuclease activity.
1)Do you think how accurate this assay for ribonuclease activity?
2)Are there any better ways you can suggest to analyse ribonuclease activity from some of the above reagents?
3)If there are contaminants,would that degrade RNAs resulting in faint bands of RNA on photography?

What is the explanation for a birth of a normal child which is depicted as a white square in the Pedigree from the parent who both are phenotypically affected from a particular disease(it is not identified in the exam),depicted as black square and circle.??
I was told today from my lecturer this case did NOT exist, but I was asked about this question for Oxford interview. I couldn't answer it and I remember roughly what the tutors explained to me that there was something to do with the connection of non-defective genes from maternal and paternal chromosomes to give rise to a normal unaffected child.

Since I was 16,I had been taught that there were only 20 amino acids on earth,but now I have come across so many others eg. Ornithine and Citrulline.Why these two amino acids are not categorised into any of essential or non-essensial amino acids types??

I'd like to say that this is the coolest website on the planet!! I love it and I'm sort of addicted to it now (not sure if it's a bad or good thing for me[])
I'm a first year Biochemist in one university in London.I'm originally from Thailand and have been in the UK for 2 years or so.
It's great to be studying in the country where science is leading and I set my mind to doing the best as I can here!!
Anyway,I also want to report a technical problem on this site.
I can't view members' profiles even I have logged in. I don't know if others have this kind of problem too. I just want to get to know more about our members in my spare time [
