General Science / Why do I get tons of mosquito bites whenever I go to Korea in the Summer?
« on: 31/03/2008 11:01:15 »
I LITERALLY get 40-50 mosquito bites after about a month.
No-one else seems to get bitten as much. Maybe as much as 10
And the people who usually get bitten, are bitten no longer, because I get bitten instead of them!!
Why is this? Is my blood THAT tasty? []

General Science / Are there medicines or treatments to make grey or white hair grow dark again?
« on: 30/03/2008 21:59:26 »
We have such good technology, but how come we haven't found a medicine which allows us to make our white hairs black??
My mum has so many white hairs now, and she wants to pluck them all!! But we have persuaded her to dye it. []

General Science / What happens when a rubber rubs pencil off paper?
« on: 30/03/2008 14:55:45 »
Curious after Paul's post..
http://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/index.php?topic=13631.0
Does the rubber take a thin layer of the paper off as well.. Or just the layer of graphite from the pencil?

General Science / Why do newly-applied braces on teeth hurt so much?
« on: 30/03/2008 12:21:08 »
Hi,
I recently got braces [] and after I got them, it didn't hurt for like the hour. And then I tried eating lunch, and OWWW, it was uber painful!.. I couldn't bite
For almost a week, it hurt like this, and also my top teeth and my bottom teeth didn't line up, (as I did the top first. Due to get the bottom teeth braces in about 3 weeks)
Why was there so much pain for the first week or so? I couldn't bite anything because it just sent shocks up my teeth, and they felt like they were wobbling so much!!
Except now after a week, my teeth are perfectly lined up.. []

General Science / Anechoic Chambers!! Sound doesn't reflect!!
« on: 29/03/2008 23:23:04 »
Apparently, in this "anechoic chamber", as my physics teacher described, is a chamber which hardly reflects any sound.
But, when he was in there for a few minutes, he felt really depressed and annoyed and.. I don't know how to explain.. Stuffy and annoying.. He was very glad when he left the room
Why would this be?

Just Chat! / Oil Prices!! How come its really expensive in UK and not so in America?
« on: 29/03/2008 23:13:09 »
It currently costs 1.1 pounds per litre.. Which is $2.20 per litre!
I'm not sure how much it is in America, but I'm assuming it's alot cheaper, more like $1.1..
It was about 50p per litre 10 years ago or so..
How come it's going up in price, and not so much in America? (I assume it's gone up a bit.. but not as much)

« on: 29/03/2008 13:46:11 »
Anything new, that has come out, or is going to come out, or something that is just wanting to come out, but we dont have the technology to make it!! []
Erm it's already come out in Japan... And I think it's cool for wood lovers []

In space, or in rockets, where there is anti-gravity.. Would there still be mass? Would it be harder to move a bowling ball than a tennis ball?

General Science / Can you arrange magnets and a compass in a way that..
« on: 29/03/2008 12:24:50 »
Can you arrange magnets and a compass in a way that even though you aren't doing anything, the needle on the compass constantly goes round 360 degrees in perpetual motion?
I'm assuming it isn't possible... But if it was, it could be used as some sort of energy creating thing!!
When made in a bigger scale..

Plant Sciences, Zoology & Evolution / How do hummingbirds flap their wings so quickly?
« on: 28/03/2008 23:05:33 »
Hummingbird
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
How on earth are they able to maintain the flapping of 15-80 flaps per second??
Why don't they just flap less, like a normal bird, and eat less nectar??
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hummingbirds are birds of the family Trochilidae, and are native only to the Americas. They are known for their ability to hover in mid-air by rapidly flapping their wings 15–80 times per second (depending on the species).

General Science / Grand Canyon HorseShoe Skywalk thing!!
« on: 28/03/2008 22:57:58 »Currently, it supports 72 million pounds of weight! And survives an 8.0 magnitude earthquake 50 miles away..
To make it this sturdy, what have they done?? Do the ends of the horseshoe carry on for like 200 metres so its stuck onto the cliff?

Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / What Exactly would happen if the Moon decided to fly off?
« on: 28/03/2008 16:45:11 »
Apart from there being no tides of course..
I also read that there would be no more evolution, somehow.. Because apparently we evolved from a fish or something, and we only got exposed outside or something because of the tides! But I don't think it makes much senser!
Would there be a catastrophe if one day the moon decided to fly off? []

General Science / We can't hear VERY loud sounds..
« on: 28/03/2008 13:00:59 »
We can't hear VERY loud sounds..
Say a REALLY loud sound and your standing next to it, you wouldn't be able to hear it..
But if you were like a mile off or something, would you then be able to hear it, as long as the pitch was within our hearing range?
That's really odd, because then someone closer can't hear it, though someone further away can!
