Plant Sciences, Zoology & Evolution / My creative educational collaborative story project
« on: 18/08/2010 10:50:22 »
Hey guys, this is the blueprint of a science-fiction collaborative story. The idea is to collaborate with student-scientists of different professions to create a science-driven educational story through creative storytelling. Whether you're a biologist, (astro)physicist, chemist, biochemist, or whatever, you will have a niche to add text to this science-driven fiction story. Let me show you the blueprint of the first story. If you wish to join, you must create a character (that can be based on you) and have an understanding of what science you choose. At the end of the story, I will write more instructions if you wish to participate.
The story begins after you've been kidnapped.
----Draft---
Prelude
Many scientists woke up in a dark room. Then, a bright white light was turned on. There was a large screen, and a woman standing in front of it. She had dark hair, and a stern face.
"Greetings to you all," she said flatly. "Worry not, you've been kidnapped for a very good reason. This project is top secret, but if you do not wish to participate, you may leave at any time, but first you must hear some facts."
There was silence, wonderment.
"We've discovered the secret of time travel, though we're still working on the accuracy of it. I am Dory, your leader in this journey through space and time. Those who will join our project, will explore the universe throughout all its eras and periods. Your knowledge is most desirable, and you may die, but if you die, remember, this is all in the name of science."
There were many muffled discussions in the audience.
"We've not brought you here to amaze you with our revolutionary technology, though I'm sure you all aware that will change life as we know it. For now, we're keeping it to ourselves, and our research, to benefit the world and the science community. We've brought you here to start a journey through time, and discover as much as we can about the early universe. We need your skills, so whatever you're apt in, if you wish to join, speak your name and profession. Otherwise, you may leave."
[Room for you to write your text on how your character reacts, and speak your name and profession]
"Very well, those who would join, follow me. Those who would not, farewell."
Chapter 1:
An expedition of X men and X women set forth. Dory, the party leader. Cuttings, the tough army man. Jeb, the journalist. [others...]
"This is the portal to the Trissaic. We're still not sure the exact time of it, but this is our quest to discover it, and what else we may discover of where we shall be. Are you ready?
[room to reply]
Let's go!"
As the last person went through the portal, it closed. They saw surrounding them all sort of unlikely trees, many of them characterized by a large crown of compound leaves and a stout trunk.
"Wow..."
"Wow indeed, but there's no time to gawk," said Dory. "We must've gotten to the polar region."
"Wait, 'polar region'?" Asked Jeb. "Aren't we supposed to be freezing to death right about now?"
"No, this is the Triassic. Here the polar regions are moist and temperate. It's the rest of the planet that suffers from very cold or very hot climates..."
[Astrophycisict injected by telling them exactly where they are: judging by the alignment of the stars, where are they?]
"What are all these weird trees?" Asked Jeb, pointing at the trees with fan-shaped leaves.
"Ginkgophytas. Haven't you ever been in Japan? There's one species of them left today, but regardless they're not what I'm looking for."
"What are you looking for."
"Evidence to the decreasing size of lepidodenrons. These are lycophytas, much smaller in our times," said Dory, showing a picture of modern day lycophytas.
"Oh, how remarkably exciting," said Jeb cynically. "Say, aren't we supposed to see dinosaurs?"
"I'm sure there are some in range," glanced Dory casually, "in such a fertile ground."
[one of the other biologists recognizes a lepidodenron]
"Yes! This is beautiful. Look at the dinstinctive diamond-shaped leaf scars that's covering its outer bark midsection....it's just beautiful..." Dory said in awe, and sighed. "These trees later become one of the coal flora. "We'd need to take a sample...--"
A roar was heard. Everyone eyes came wide-open.
"It's a T-Rex ain't it?" Asked Cuttings, readying his gun, aiming it to the place the noise came from.
From the bushes emerged a heavily-built reptile approximately the size of a pig. It walked on four, having a pair of tusk-like canines.
"Ahh... that's a lystrosaurus..." Looked Dory in joy. "Worry not, they're herbivorous."
"They carry viruses?!?" Asked Cuttings worriedly.
Dory sighed. "No, no, they eat plants. Jeez..."
"Oh....ah!..."
"Put your gun down, Cuttings," ordered Dory.
Reluctantly Cuttings followed the order.

This is the current draft. I will continue the story later, preferably with your help. You can add your character text, especially where there are brackets, but even wherever you want. Feel free to edit current text freely. You can even edit the entire story. Just try not to alter the entire concept as you do, rather to add scientific facts, ideas, and colour to the story-- that is most welcome. Eventually, I think we ought to have a pretty neat product! I'll be running this ship as project leader, and my character (Dory) is also the current main leader of the story.
