This might work, I'm about to try it on an actual silver birch slice. I tried it with the stencil straight on the wood and it's leaving some of the adhesive behind on this wood, even after further sanding. I'm hoping that a couple layers of the varnish first will allow the stencil to come off nicely and protect the areas I don't want the solution to go on. Then the hot air gun can burn through the lacquer where the solution is appled... here's hoping!
