when an electric heater is turned on, and begins warming up, it has a distinctive smell. But what is the smell?

The one I am most aware of tends to be burning dust - but then, maybe you have a more dust free house than I.

Usually, singeing dust. Especially at the start of the winter season, or otherwise when the heater has not been used for some time.
Blowing the dust out before switching on (depending on the type of appliance) can reduce the smell.

Dust is mainly shed skin cells, after all.

Is that what she was wearing when you disrobed her, and carelessly allowed her clothes to fall upon the electric heater, and then having to embarrassingly be rescued by the fire brigade while still oblivious of the fact that the heat you feel is more than mere passion.
