"Earth" by Press and Siever - is an excellent first year undergrad level text.

A quick look on Amazon suggests that it has been updated it to "Understanding Earth" which integrates with some web resources...

Holms - Principals of Physical Geology

This seminal work on the process of geology was first published in 1899 and (last?) revised in 1945 by the author, in 1979 by his granddaughter and last in 2004 by Duff. This text assumes no prior knowledge of geology and provides an introduction to the science that is probably the most comprehensive physical geology ever written.

Follow this book, if you get through it - it is 800+ pages, by a good historical geology book. Raymond C. Moore's book is a classic but you need to buy it. There is no online version of the latest edition. There are several historical geology books listed in Google Books.

An older but classic text, 1921, "A Textbook of Geology: Historical Geology," by Amadeus William Grabau is a comprehensive book but is probably outdated in certain areas. Grabau's two volume "Principles of Stratigraphy" is one of the must reads for any geology student but is slightly more advanced than a historical geology text.

prefer reading books though, reading from the internet make me cross eyed.  if i can find it ill buy it
