Why does spicy food make me hiccup?

Jeffrey Schuh  asked the Naked Scientists:

Great Podcast, and ohh the visuals I conjure up.

Hey, I have a question.  Every time I take the first bite out of some spicy food, I get the hiccups, guaranteed.  They usually last about a minute, and then go away for the rest of the meal never to come back until the next time I eat spicy food.

What's going on here?  Am I just a source of entertainment for my friends?

What do you think?
